I previously discussed in this forum the New Jersey Devils' sad attendance in just their second game in the brand new Prudential Center (which some have now dubbed "The Rock" — mildly clever). In the comments that followed, one of the reasons given was that it was Halloween that night. Well, last night's announced crowd was 14,032, over 3,000 below capacity. As the boxscore at ESPN.com helpfully points out, the arena was 79.6 percent full. Which translates to 20.4 percent empty.

That's on a par with the Devils' home games since their opener, except for the fact that the Devils' opponent last night was the Pittsburgh Penguins. You know, the team with Sidney Crosby — only the biggest star in the game — not to mention other young talents such as Evgeni Malkin and Jordan Staal.

Soooooooooo, I can't help but wonder what the excuse is now. Is Guy Fawkes Day a big deal in Jersey? — Joe Guckin
