New York Rangers forward Sean Avery has gotten some attention from this blog. Jim determined that Avery is gayer than he is, and Cyd wrote about his upcoming summer internship at Vogue. I, on the other hand, called him a jerk after his latest on-ice antics.

Unfortunately, this Avery update isn't a very happy one. He was taken to St. Vincent's Medical Center after suffering a lacerated spleen in Tuesday night's 5-3 loss to the Pittsbugh Penguins at the Garden. He's listed in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery. The team denied a New York Daily News report that said Avery was unconscious and in cardiac arrest when he was taken to the hospital.

Avery's season is over, which means his internship can begin once he's up and around. His team's season is also just about over. The Penguins now lead the Eastern Conference semifinal 3 games to none. Only two NHL teams have ever rallied to win a series after losing the first three games, the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs and the 1975 New York Islanders. Although Avery isn't the most talented player, and though he's still a jerk on the ice, there's no denying he adds a spark to his team. The Rangers are doomed. — Joe Guckin
