Is it an apology or a non-apology? The head of the Croatian Football Federation Vlatko Markovic has issued an underwhelming statement following his claims last week that gays don’t play soccer because the sport is only played by “healthy people.” According to the Agence France-Presse:

“I apologise to all those who were hurt by parts of my interview,” to the Vecernji List daily, he said in a statement on the federation’s website.

“I apologise to all those who were hurt by parts of my interview,” to the Vecernji List daily, he said in a statement on the federation’s website.

“My intention was in no way to insult or offend anyone … I have absolutely nothing against members of any minority, especially not against those of homosexual orientation,” he said.

I don't speak Croatian, so I can't tell you exactly what he said. But it's hard to believe a reporter would make up the homophobic comments he allegedly made last week. Still, given the pressure that Markovic has faced from across Europe and the world, it's hard to believe his apology is completely sincere.
