This is good for an eye roll. NBCOlympics.com and People Magazine are confirming that gold medalists Evan Lysacek and Nastia Liukin are an "item." While the bizarrely homophobic figure skating world is surely rejoicing at this news, I'm less moved.

Lysacek's Olympic performance was spectacular, as was the way he handled himself afterwards. But, with the exception of his joy at winning gold, I've yet to witness anything out of him that rings genuine. This doesn't change that.

Lysacek’s Olympic performance was spectacular, as was the way he handled himself afterwards. But, with the exception of his joy at winning gold, I’ve yet to witness anything out of him that rings genuine. This doesn’t change that.

“The couple met in October 2008 while performing on an NBC Skating & Gymnastic Spectacular and told the magazine that they have been dating since last summer when they attended the ESPYs together.

“We became good friends and have become really close since then,” Lysacek told People.”

Lysacek, of course, has no obligation to tell anyone who he's dating or why. But whatever you think of Lysacek, it's worth remembering that he's still immersed in the world of figure skating–a sport where a female companion just might be equal to a quadruple axel.
