Professional surfer Anastasia Ashley has lent her voice to the fight for same-sex marriage, openly endorsing equality for gay and lesbian couples.

I love gay people. I’m all for equal rights. I think everyone should have equal rights. I definitely agree with same-sex marriage. If you love someone and you want to marry someone, you should be able to do that no matter what their gender is.

Ashley said one of her best friends is a gay man. While she has always been gay-friendly, she said that friendship has opened her eyes to the struggles gay people face.

One of the biggest stars in her sport, Ashley has seen the homophobic side of surfing, and she says it's getting better.

I know that there is a level of homophobia in surfing. But I know it’s changing. For the most part, the surfers are open-minded and accepting of any sexual orientation.
