Our new logo took a lot of conversation and re-hashing. What made it so difficult is that, unlike the rest of SB Nation's blogs that represent a team with a nickname and mascot, we don't have a Steeler or a Blue Devil to fall back on for inspiration.
We also didn't want to rely on a traditional "gay" symbol like a triangle, rainbow or lamdba.
As we explored what Outsports means, we got to the core of our name: Out Sports. Coming "Out" is a big part of that, so we started talking about a symbol for coming out. When we put that issue in the locker room, we stumbled across the idea of not "coming out of the closet" but "coming out of the locker."
The hands represent the athlete, coach or fan who has decided to push open the door. The fact that the lock is open symbolizes our community's role in helping to unlock the closet door in sports. And the burst shows the energy and power behind coming out of the closet (and using the color purple for the burst was our nod to the traditional gay community).
We know some will like it, some will hate it and some won't care. For us, it's a strong representation of what we do every morning we wake up, and what we feel most of our readers push for every day.
