Obama wants LGBT Olympians to win medals at Sochi Olympics, opposes boycott

Evan Habeeb-USA TODAY Sports

President Obama today addressed the Winter Olympics in Russia in connection with the new laws that criminalize homosexual "propaganda."

"I do not think it's appropriate to boycott the Olympics. We've got a bunch of Americans who are training hard, who are doing everything they can to succeed," Obama said at a White House news conference Friday afternoon.

"One of the things I'm really looking forward to is maybe some gay and lesbian athletes bringing home the gold or silver or bronze, which would, I think, go a long way in rejecting the kind of attitudes that we're seeing there."

"If Russia doesn't have gay or lesbian athletes, it will probably make their team weaker," Obama added.

To make Obama's wish come true, that would mean we need LGBT Winter Olympians to come out publicly. Given the current climate there, I would not advise gay Russian athletes to come out, but athletes in Western countries where gays have protection should strongly consider doing so.
