IOC says Russia's anti-gay laws don't violate Olympic charter

Oleg Nikishin

The International Olympic Committee said that new anti-gay laws passed in Russia don't violate the Olympic charter and that there will be no discrimination, drawing condemnation from gay rights groups. The comments came during a site visit to Sochi, site of the Winter Olympics, by Jean-Claude Killy, chairman of the IOC's Co-ordination Commission.

"The Olympic Charter states that all segregation is completely prohibited, whether it be on the grounds of race, religion, color or other, on the Olympic territory," Killy said . "That will be the case, we are convinced. As long as the Olympic Charter is respected, we are satisfied, and that is the case."

Retorted Chad Griffin, head of the Human Rights Campaign: "If this law doesn't violate the IOC's charter, then the charter is completely meaningless.

Griffin has that right. Killy and the IOC has washed its hands of standing up to Russia, saying it can't question laws passed in other countries. None of this is a surprise. The IOC is a historically corrupt and greedy organization that has long catered to oppressive regimes as long as the money flows and the Games go on.
