Cathal McCarron, an Irish Gaelic football player, has caused a controversy after being discovered starring in a gay porn film on the site TheCastingRoom.net. The abuse got so bad that he shut down his Twitter feed and Facebook page.

McCarron used the pseudonym Fergus in a series of three downloadable films totaling 15 minutes, with one called "Wank." It's an apt description and McCarron certainly is not shy in front of the camera. The film was released last month but Irish football fans discovered it yesterday and recognized his face. They took to Twitter to comment and often not in a nice way.

The father of one has since shut down his Twitter and Facebook accounts after receiving the torrent of abuse in response to online reports about him appearing in the film.In reaction, fans have started a Supporting Cathal McCarron page on Facebook. One clue as to why McCarron might have done porn is his gambling addiction, so bad that he checked himself in for rehab today. He might have simply been desperate for money. Joe Brolly, an Irish football analyst said of McCarron: "Kid is in a bad place. Hard to know how it got so bad. … I have been in contact with him. He is in a desperate way. Chronic underlying problems."
After hearing about McCarron's gambling problem, some fans who had mocked him for being in gay porn, changed their tune. "I retract any statements I made. Very insensitive," one tweeted.
