Real Madrid soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo was serenaded by a section of Barcelona fans with chants of ‘Cristiano come out of the closet’ during the teams’ 1-1 La Liga draw in Spain on Saturday.

Ronaldo has been the subject of gay taunts, including one three weeks ago in which an opponent allegedly called him a “faggot,” so what happened Saturday is not unusual. The chants by the Barcelona fans were drowned out the home Real Madrid fans and Ronaldo did not comment on them.

Los Angeles Galaxy player Robbie Rogers, himself openly gay, tweeted about the Ronaldo chant:

Ronaldo seems totally unfazed by the gay slurs, as he should. He is one of the world’s most famous and richest athletes, yet the slurs show how ingrained homophobia is in soccer’s culture.
