Gay Boys Got Game

By Randy Boyd

Yes, Virginia, Gay Boys Can Ball

And dribble, shoot, and score. And not just at circuit parties!

If you’re skeptical, check out one of the upcoming hoop tournaments heating up the hardwood this winter in two U.S. gay meccas.

San Diego’s got next, hosting the 1st Hillcrest Classic during the three-day MLK holiday weekend in January. The city may not have true pro ball (the new ABA2000 WildFire notwithstanding), the Chargers may suck and the Padres aren’t much better, but San Diego has some of the country’s most organized gay sports leagues with a high level of community participation.

Aiming to be as successful as the city’s gay softball leagues, SD Hoops has scheduled their tourney at the perfect time, the dead of winter, which is a great way to lure gay sports fans and players to the city like Big Ten teams to Pasadena. Click here for details on the SD Tourney.

After you’ve had enough sunshine (as if), grab your snow shoes and head to the Midwest for the Chicago Hoops Classic during St. Patty’s day weekend in March. Believe us here at Ballin’ With Randy Boyd HQ, it’s the best roundball action in the Windy City save maybe the visiting teams at United Center. This is a tourney that attracts teams from both coasts and the heartland. And contrary to rumors, the draw is more than the annual Hoops Classic Shower Contest, held at Spin in the heart of Boys Town the Friday before the tourney starts. Click here for the 411 on the Chicago Tourney.

How good is gay ball, you might ask. Like life, it runs the gamut. Like the gay demographic, it’s all over the map. That means you have guys who wouldn’t make the LA Clippers or any league’s equivalent. That also means there are some seriously good-assed players that got gayme. Dunking? Some. Skilled play? You bet. Guys who know the game? Definitely. Gay ball has it all: former high school and college players, weekend jocks, guys out for a good cardio workout, guys grabbing a piece of the glory that was elusive to them in gym class.

If you’re in or near SD or Chitown in early 2001, forgo one night at the bars and check out some gay men sweating, dribbling, shooting and scoring.

HOOP HOTTIES OF THE WEEK

Luuuuuuke. As in Recker of Iowa. He’s still a babe. And boy, he must be relieved the Big Ten schedule doesn’t take him to Bloomington this year, site of his Knightmare years. He will see his old crimson buds at Iowa City in late January, but 15,000 Hawkeye fans will have his back.

Adam Harrington, Auburn Tigers. OK, so he’s a little lean (6’5", 185), but he is young and growing still. He makes the Ballin’ hottie list for his clutch 3 that helped down Oregon in the Las Vegas Showdown recently. That and the fact that the guy is to drool for.
