You
can meet our pollsters and see what
biases are coming into play. Florida, Florida State, Notre
Dame and Michigan lead the list of disliked teams.
Biggest Gainer: Maryland,
who jumped six spots (somehow) for taking care of perennial
basketball powerhouse Wake Forest.
Biggest Loser: Colorado State, who dropped a
whopping 10 spots after losing at home to UNLV. The
hottest team in the nation is the USC Trojans. Last year,
the hottest team in the nation at the end of the regular season
was the Colorado Buffaloes. They didn't get into the
National Championship game either and got drubbed by Oregon in
the Fiesta Bowl. Then again, the team that did make it
(Nebraska) got slaughtered in the championship game - so, we
didn't learn much there.
Again, there's a strong case for
a college football tournament. Again, we're left without
one. I don't have much "against" Miami - though,
I'll be hoping they lose to Virginia Tech just because it would
cast yet another shadow of doubt on this stupid BCS thing. The
only team to already earn a berth in the Fiesta is Ohio
State. PacTenDude
calls them "An undewhelming 13-0 team..." I
disagree. They played, and beat, three of the BCS' Top 15
teams. What other team can say that? Not
Miami. Not Iowa. Not Georgia. Only USC and
Oklahoma beat two BCS Top 15 teams - but no one can match Ohio
State for quality wins this season. The
quote of the day goes to Carum:
"Now don't go blaming Coach Willingham for what happened at USC. How,
in a good Catholic university like Notre Dame, was he supposed to teach his
players the way to properly handle a Trojan?" JKT
has an interesting way of looking at Miami and Iowa this
year: "In my opinion, Iowa is still the best team in the country right now. Miami shamelessly runs up the score to try to pad its stats in the computer polls and for Heisman voters."
Well, since they dropped "margin of victory" from the
computer polls in the BCS, I don't think that's what is helping
Miami stay #1.
As for me, I won't have much of a
vested interest in the Fiesta Bowl. Miami? Ohio
State? Iowa? Yawn. Until the NCAA figures out
a way to have a tournament that includes 8-16 teams, December
and early January will mean waning interest in college football
for me. Still,
if any of you will be in Tempe for the Fiesta Bowl, drop me a
line at cyd@outsports.com;
there will be a couple gay-themed parties there and I'd love to
extend the invitation to any Outsporters who will be there.
