Video: MMA Fighter Damian Norris: Let Fallon Fox Fight!

Professional MMA fighter Damian Norris released a video today in full support of Fallon Fox fighting as a woman.

You guys have people in the Olympics that were men to women and women to men. How do you say somebody can't fight in UFG, but they can represent Team USA. ... Let her fight. She's a damn good fighter. And if you have a problem with her, step in the cage with her. Don't run your mouth over the Internet.

Norris claims to be a "teammate" of Fox and has a record of 3-1.

Doctors Weigh In: Fallon Fox Has No Unfair Advantage

I'm glad Steph Daniels from Bloody Elbow is looking into all of this, uncovering for herself and MMA fans what we in the LGBT community have known for years:

Steph Daniels: Does Fallon carry a significant advantage in mixed martial arts competition, due to being biologically born a male?

Dr. Marci Bowers: Most measures of physical strength minimize, muscle mass decreases, bone density decreases, and they become fairly comparable to women in their musculature. After as much time as has passed in her case, if tested, she would probably end up in the same muscle mass category as her biologically born female counterpart.

...

Dr. Sherman Leis: She's been doing that (hormone therapy) for so many years, that she probably does not have a significant advantage, if any at all. Especially because she wasn't a big man when she lived as a male. She's 5'7 and slight of build, and basically the size of an average female. Factor in that she's been on hormones for so long, and has had the surgery, she more than likely has the muscle mass, bone density and strength of most females.

Great job, Steph! Keep asking questions!

MMA Licensing Board Does Have National Trans Policy

Sports Illustrated today published a lengthy feature article on trans MMA fighter Fallon Fox, written by Loretta Hunt. In her investigation, Hunt discovered that MMA's national licensing body, the Association of Boxing Commissions, does in fact have a policy on trans fighters that the ABC adopted last year:

The guidelines set clear definitions as to what constitutes a transsexual athlete (a transgender having undergone the surgeries necessary for anatomical change), as well as minimum requirements for the hormone therapy appropriate to their assigned sex to maintain competitive equity among the athlete pool.

For instance, a female transgender athlete like Fallon would be required to produce medical documentation of the relevant surgeries and procedures she underwent during transition (it should be noted that it is not a requirement for the athlete to undergo complete gender assignment surgery), as well as detailed paperwork from a board certified endocrinologist or internist showing that she underwent hormone therapy for a minimum of two years following a gonadectomy and the levels have been within acceptable range for a female.

The problem now is getting the Florida State Boxing Commission to adopt the policy and implement whatever process needs to transpire to license Fox. That will take weeks, if not months.

ESPN: Florida Unlikely to License Fox to Fight Women, Next Fight is Postponed

ESPN's uneducated MMA reporter Franklin McNeil delivers some backward analysis of Fox's likelihood of being licensed to fight as a woman. He says that there is no transgender policy in the state, which Outsports sources say may not be true. He also says that Fox did not make her transgender status known, which she does not have to do as she is recognized by the State of Illinois as a female!!

And instead of talking about how backward the decision would be to bar her from fighting, McNeil focuses on his own bias that says she is unlikely to be licensed.

Either way, the fact is that Fox's next fight, scheduled for April 20, has been postponed, according to ESPN.

Our original story on Fox dove into her past and the fact that she would be able to compete in many other female sports leagues and international competitions.

Check out the video report on ESPN.com.

Salon: Let Fallon Fox Fight

Katie McDonough argues the trans MMA fighter should be allowed to fight as a woman:

The Unified Rules of MMA clearly outline the weight class divisions that rank fighters, and Fox is part of the featherweight division, along with other women who are between 135 and 145 pounds. And, like the Olympics, many other athletic organizations have rules governing the fair participation of trans athletes. Per NCAA guidelines, a transgender woman can play on a women's team after a year of testosterone suppression therapy. Fox has been hormonally female for a decade now.
