The Report From L.A.
March 2, 2002
WEATHER: Sunny, 75, a bit breezy.
TURNOUT: A late-arriving crowd, but we eventually wound up with a great group and played 3 hours.
HIGHLIGHTS:
BALL HAWKS: I counted six interceptions and two others that should have been but were dropped. The best was Kevin's shoe-tip pick that he carried in for a score. Jay had two, including a nice one where he kept his feet in at the 1. Octavio and Demond each played the tip drill beautifully. Octavio caught a deflection at the goal line and weaved his way 80 yards for a score. Demond snagged a carom and ran down field with Octavio, alternately lateralling the ball to each other until they were kind enough to let Jim go the final 5 yards for the score.
OUCH! On one play, David made a nice defensive play by tipping the pass. It changed the trajectory and hit Phil on the fingertips. It bent one finger 90 degrees, grossing us all out. He wound up popping it back into place and continued playing.
Eric played really well, making many super plays despite a bad groin (but he'll pay for it).
CATCHES OF THE DAY: Some awesome ones: Kevin (who makes a habit out of this stuff); Phil (bad finger and all); Bubba (who snagged several); Demond (who skied high twice for superb touchdowns) and Chris (who always seem to get open).
ESCORT SERVICE: On the game's final play JP made a nice catch along the right sideline and cut back inside. One miss. Two misses and he was off to the races. He was escorted the final 25 yards by Demond and Octavio who took turns blocking Chris.
DEFENSE! DEFENSE! The art of flag-grabbing is often unnoticed (I can't grab one to save my life). The best efforts on Saturday came from Phil, David, Eric and JP, each who stopped TDs or long gains. Kudos also to Bryan for skying in a great effort to knock away a sure
completion.
TRIPPED OVER HIS SHOELACES: Bizarre play of the day came when Kevin caught a long pass and seemed destined to score. But his knee buckled and he stumbled and fell like a St. Patrick's Day drunk.
DISTRACTIONS: Kevin, Jay, Eric and Chris yawned, but the studly soccer player kicking balls sans shirt distracted the rest of us. Brent, of course, ran over and started snapping away.
(Note: Outsports
co-founders Jim Buzinski and Cyd Zeigler Jr. play in this group.)
