The Report From L.A.
Nov. 24, 2001
Well, those of you last week who promised to be there this and didn't show up because of a little rain: you missed one of the most-fun games ever. It was out first rain game in nearly three years and we had a blast.
WEATHER: Rain, rain, rain (sometimes almost sideways), windy, upper 50s. The heaviest rain we've ever played in.
TURNOUT: We had 11, amazing considering how many were out of town for the holiday and because of the weather. The brave souls deserve recognition: Brent, Cyd, Bryan, David Hinders, David Bond, James, Jay, me and three new players--Jai, Adam and Alex.
DEFENSE! DEFENSE! We played for about 2 hours and played 2 games and had a total of 2 touchdowns, a modern record low. We also had six interceptions on mostly underthrown balls: two by Jay and Jai and one each by Adam and Cyd.
CATCH OF THE DAY: Adam made a great adjustment on a pass of about 20 yards, snagged the ball and slid in the mud while holding on.
INJURY REPORT: James was blocking and, unfortunately, his chin
met Jai's forehead (he was rushing), and it took 15 stitches to close.
We hope he heals quickly!
DEFENSIVE PLAY OF THE GAME: Alex chased down Jai, grabbed his flag while diving, then hydroplaned about 10 yards into a bench.
HEY, LOVE THOSE MUD-COLORED CONTACTS: Adam did a flop on a play and wound up with mud on his contact.
TRICKERY: Jai threw several nice passes off of wide receiver passes, including two nice ones to David H. who found himself wide open.
MUDDERS: Jay seemed to run better in the slop than dry land, making several nice moves. Alex and James also sloshed their way to some nice first downs on shovel passes.
NICE CATCHES: David B., which set up a short touchdown. David H. along the sidelines for a first down. Cyd on the only TD of the second game, keeping inbounds on a 20-yard pass. Brent, who hung on for a 2-point conversion.
NICE THROWS: There weren't a whole lot (the ball was waterlogged and hard to throw), but Bryan had four solid passes in leading his team to the game's first score.
IF I DID THIS AT HOME MY MOM WOULD KILL ME: Drying 24 flags, a pair of cleats and some beanbags in a dryer creates quite a racket.
YOU CALL THIS WEATHER?: Adam and Jai played in San Francisco before moving down. Saturday seemed downright balmy compared to the Bay Area.
NEXT: Saturday Dec. 1. RAIN OR SHINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(Note: Outsports
co-founders Jim Buzinski and Cyd Zeigler Jr. play in this group.)
