Now that Steve McNair won his arbitration, does this mean only that he can work out with the team? Despite all the talk the Titan Front Office is mouthing about wanting to work a new deal with him for less money, I just don't see how this is possible. I don't think McNair was bluffing when he said that he wants to be released if they don't pay him what he wants and also guarantee him three years of playing time?
Since the Titans refused to exercise that $50M bonus and paid the $1M penalty to kill his current contract, and since Steve is not likely to accept any contract that pays him less than his current $9M/year, I don't see how things can get worked out to everybody's satisfaction. Especially, I don't see how the Titans can keep McNair (e.g.; they would have to contend with his $23M salary cap hit) and still sign Vince Young and all their free agents (if they decide to keep them) and stay under the cap, even if it did increase this year. I guess they could sign Vince to a big contract with a fat signing bonus and then spread out the salary cap hit over several years. They will have to if they are serious about re-signing Steve.
Even though McNair's current contract does not expire util the end of the 2006 season, the Titans still might have to release him for financial reasons. They are out $13.5M from previous pro-rated signing bonuses no matter what they do this season; since they opted out of the current contract that ran through 2009. Because they did this, those pro-rated signing bonuses automatically became due (accelerated) and will count against the Titans' 2006 salary cap.
If they re-sign him at his $9M salary (won't happen), they will absorb a salary cap hit of $23M (his $9M salary plus the accellerated bonus of $13.5M).
I guess they could work a deal with another team, but who would want him? He's damaged goods. I hope they can work something out; Steve has been a loyal soldier and agreed to contract re-negotiations every time the Titans needed to get back under the cap. But I don't think he will agree to a salary cut this time. It's too bad, because Vince Young will never have a better mentor for his style of play than Steve McNair, and, Steve deserves to retire with the team that made him.
