I have to say how pleased I am to read the stories of these varsity athletes who seem to be finding such aceptance when coming out. Guess there really is hope that society is progressing and that some day "coming out" will be a non-event. Perhaps one of these jocks one day will progress to the elite level, either as an Olympian or perhaps a major league athlete, and not have to retreat into the closet. That really will be progress.

I still believe that rowing is one of the most tolerant sports out there. My guess is that because rowing is one of the most intense sports in existance, rowers only care about one thing: winning. Even if you were an axe murderer, if you make the boat go faster than another guy, you'd be welcomed.

One question though... did this guy end up being a rower or a coxswain? He talks about both...

I'm not sure I like this analogy. mad.gif

WTG Andrew! I wish I had that kind of courage in college but the 1890's were a very different time. smile.gif

Yeah that's not a great analogy, I know. If you can help me think of a better one, go right ahead.

I think he was the coxswain. He graduated Saturday and is in Europe for some R&R. I trust he can respond some time after he gets back.

Now that I think about it, there are a lot of things that would come out of a coxswain's mouth during a race that could sound awkward coming from a gay guy.

Trust me, a lot of rape metaphors, excrement metaphors, etc. Standard fare.
