Something that Jim and I have been working on for the last couple of years has been our first book, and it's coming out in the next month. We think it's entertaining, informative and there is a bunch of new stuff in there - luckily, our editor agrees.
Check it out - and you can preorder it today on Amazon:
Several of our discussion board members are mentioned in the book. We know you've all been a big part of the growth of this site and the shift in the attitudes that people in sports have toward gay people, and that gay people have toward sports.
There's also a great introduction by New York Daily News' Mike O'Keefe.

Also, the cover we have on our front page is the actual one. The one right now on Amazon was their first prototype. The book also has photos from Finneye and Brent among others.

We're very open to making some trips to nearby cities. If anyone has a bookstore in their city they think may be good and interested, please drop us a line at mail@outsports.com, and we'll try to contact them.

As Joe said, the book is out
We would really, really, really appreciate it if everyone on the board bought a copy of the book. Amazon is presently offering it for $13.50. That's 30% off the cover price. It took a LOT of work and a LOT of effort to put this book together. We've gotten really great response so far (Bob Lipsyte called it "great"), and we're very proud of it. Of course, we couldn't have done it without the great support of everyone on this board, and we say so in our Acknowledgments!
Signings will be coming. We'll definitely have ones in NYC and L.A. Our publisher is working on one in Philly (One way or another, I'll make that happen). I'm hoping Atlanta will come together too, as one of our Outsporters is really gung-ho about it. Other than that, we are open to suggestions! And whether you buy the book at a bookstore or Amazon.com, we'll happily sign it!

I second what Cyd said. We're proud of the book and it was a lot of work. More than 90% of it is new material (there are 19 "best of" essays), along with photos by Brent and Finneye among others. We would love if you all bought a copy. We couldn't have done it without you!

So where & when is the LA signing?...I'd like to be there. But you have no idea what I look like so...What should I wear? Should I bring my entourage? Is latex out of style?

I am looking forward to reading the book. But, and this may sound piddly, the summary on the Web site includes a chapter "When Your Ready to Come Out". I hope, I really hope, that "Your" is an error on the Web site and not in the book itself.

I will have to pick it up...I only hope that it contains insightful reporting/writing as this
The rest of the meet, which attracted about 120 competitors from around the world, not only ran smoothly, it finished ahead of schedule. It closed on a high note, with a fun relay featuring one team dressed as members of the Village People and another team where each successive member ran with one fewer article of clothing until the anchor leg ran in little more than a g-string.
And we wonder why gay athletes/events are not taken seriously. I know there is a thread regarding ads on this sight and people not wanting to share with family and friends because of pictures. I would be more concerened about what they read.

My local Barnes and Noble didn't have it. I was going to read it during this rainy weekend. I'll have to order it when I pick up my copy of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, next week.

I picked it up at the Barnes & Noble in Rancho Mirage. They had only one copy so now they'll have to reorder.
All in all I felt it to be very deja vu because I read just about every article posted on Outsports.com but I was very happy to contribute to the Outsports fund anyway. I only wish the B&W plates in the book were all gay athletes. Don't get me wrong, I'm a HUGE fan of Olavi's photography. Finneye is amazing. But a book like this needed more positive gay athletic images and not just pretty bodies. My 2 cents. Very nice first effort though!

The middle photo section was designed at the publisher's request to highlight our best photography, regardless of orientation, but it is missing a title page to indicate that. The photos, with few exceptions, that are in the rest of the book are all gay/lesbian athletes at our request.

'Foreward' doesn't contain an 'e'.

Actually, "Foreword" does contain an 'e'
But it says "foreward", with an 'a'.
As you say, the noun meaning "prefatory comments" is spelled "foreword". The adjective meaning "to or toward what is ahead or in front" is spelled "forward".
"Foreward" appears to be an unfortunate combination of the two.

Cyd or Jim, Do you happen to know which bookstore in Toronto will be carrying your book? "Chapters"? "Not The Rosedale Library"?
I was at the Glad Day Bookstore last night and asked about The Outsports Revolution. They didn't have the book but the guy said they would order copies and call me when it was in stock. Although I know I can order it from Amazon.com, I would like to support a local gay bookstore, and as they will be ordering a few copies, will be happy to know that it is on the shelf at that store (along with books like Dan Woog's Jocks, John Amaechi's book, Mark Tewksbury's book, etc. which I happened to see on the shelf in the sports/health section).

I was downtown the other day and went into Borders out of curiousity to see if they had it and where it was located. Would they put it in with all the gay-themed books? Nope -- it was in the Sports section, under "Sports Reference" -- which I think is an odd catch-all title for all books that aren't about one particular sport.
