Full Version: Very disappointed at San Fran..no mil discouont at all!

Just done with my tech school, received my order and came to San Fran to bid goodbye to parents before reporting to my next duty station. I spent hundreds of dollars for clothes and other personal items to bring to my next duty station. I'm disappointed that not a single store gave me a military discsount. A city not receptive to military members! It would have made my trip to San fran more memorable. Oh well, i got to see my parents.

Even a prude does not need a lot of clothes in Hawaii tongue.gif

Yeah my bro just got a nice new pad on base in San Diego. I really feel for you. As soon as I am done with my share of the deficit, I'll see if I can help you out biggrin.gif

Get under a waterfall and get over it.

Tell me, Providence, how do you like your pay and benefits from the military? Maybe you should ask Bush and Company for a raise. So S.F. did not give you a discount on clothes? Boo-hoo-hoo.

I'm more concerned the U.S. Army has not provided our men and women in Iraq with protective armor.

Enjoy your expensive new clothes (was Goodwill closed?), in Hawaii and think about our soldiers in the war who lack armor to stay alive.

I hardly think every store offers discounts to the military. Not every store offers discounts to senior citizens. Some stores don't offer any discounts. I would think that, if you want or need a military discount that much, you would do some research (phone calls, web searches, etc.) and find stores that do offer such a discount BEFORE you go shopping, instead of saying an entire city is "not receptive to military members."

Perhaps Bill O'Reilly will reinvite Al Qaeda to attack San Francisco. First those horrible Friscans vote to limit military recruiting and now the cheap liberal bastards won't give a discount for the military? They'll have it coming, that's for sure!

Is there a WalMart in Frisco? I'm sure they'd be happy to give you a discount. And I'm sure the good folks at the Milking Station would not only offer a discount, but service you for free!

Most places near military bases offer discounts. In general, I mean - it's been too long since I've been in SF for me to speak about there. Were you anywhere near the Presidio? That might've been the best bet.

There is no Wal-Mart in San Francisco. Of course there is no Frisco either! eek!

And as soon as the soldiers I pay for sex start giving me a discount, I'll talk Gavin into mandating the stores to do the same! wink

Good Luck Providence, hope you like the new base. Dillards offers a military discount 2-3 times a year but you will find out as far as shopping for clothes you will not find much of a military discount at all if any.

Hope you have a very nice Thanksgiving!!
theodoresdaddy
there is a PX at the Presidio, I believe

and yes, BlowBuddies does let guys in for free with a military ID--not that I've ever been there

and when you have a city that's been hit hard by DADT, you're not going to see too much sympathy for military

you should have been in for Fleet Week--lots of discounts then
PatSanFran
Is there still a PX in the Presidio? The former one is now Sports Basement, a wonderful place for sporting gear and apparel. The founder is on our Board of Directors. Great guy and great company. Good discounted prices because alot of the merchandise are from last year. Doesn't bother me a bit that my Mizuno shoes are from 2004...they still work just fine and I saved $40.

Let's see I just spent a total of 5 minutes on the web, found several places that list stores that offered military discounts. Did a cross check and found several of these stores in San Francisco.

I guess they don't teach you do some advance work in that tech school. I am interested to know if you visited every store and asked in the city of San Francisco, since you seemed very quick at being disappointed in the entire city.

Kill em all and let God sort 'em out. Maybe there really is a God and this is his process of elimination. You know another genius boy wonder goes off to war rolleyes.gif

Stay safe Providence. If you e-mail me I'll give you the name of my nephew and you can give shout out to him from me if you see him.

May be tough to catch him away from his multiple girlfriends though.

Wouldn't worry about not getting the discounts though you might want to correct the spelling in the thread title. I think my nephew would be a lot worse off financially if he were ex-military.

Most all the military installations in the Bay Area were closed during the military cutbacks under the Clinton administration. The Presidio is now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and has no military. Even the Coast Guard station there is gone. Lucas Films has opened its second facility outside Skywalker Ranch there. The Alameda Naval Air Station, Treasure Island Naval Base, Mare Island -- all closed. I believe the nearest PX and Comissary are at Travis Air Forse Base in Fairfield, which is about half way to Sacramento from here.

Oh yeah, and there is a Frisco. It's back east about 50 miles west of Denver.

I wasn't going to say anything to you, Providence, about your breath-taking sense of entitlement.

Where do you get off expecting special treatement in Union Square because you signed up for the military? Is it because you bought into the rhetoric about how the US is fighting the just fight in Iraq because it prevents terrorist attacks against the US? I guess all those ambushed Humvees over there are worth it... NOT!

San Francisco is the bluest area of a blue state. We are dead set against the war in Iraq, but we will cut GIs some slack because they are bit players in this madness. I don't think anyone will spit in your eye as they did to GIs during Vietnam. Consider yourself lucky. Unlike during the Vietnam War there is no draft. You are a willing participant and must, at some level, agree with what's going on.

Good luck in your new duty station, Prov-Man, and next time visit SD instead of SF; you'll find friendlier folks here by far! Stay safe, Happy Thanksgiving, and thanks for serving in the military while we serve up turkey here at home.

Hey GMGINSFO(sp),

I requested for San Diego and other west coast installations in my dreamsheet but to no avail.. Two of my fellow Hospital Corpsman shipmates got San Diego though. How Lucky! Maybe i'll get it next time.

I got Norfolk instead. The Armpit of the EAST!
Providence704
hey sportnlife,

is ur nephew stationed in Norfolk>?
sportinlife
No, he's in Hawaii. Which is what is in your profile after "location".

Apparently that has changed. Don't be so down on "armpits" though. They are closer to the brain than your crotch, which tends to control a lot of men's actions. wink

I've omitted several others.

There is a free tabloid paper handed out in the DC area that gives details on all sorts of MWR activites. I see it at the libraries rom time to time, but I've forgotten its name.

This isn’t a surprise. San Francisco has a long standing history of not supporting the military. Yet, they begged and pleaded with the Congress to keep military bases from closing in the bayarea during the Clinton administration?? It serves them right for their lack of support and sometimes hatred of the military. They proved it again with their recent approval to keep military recruiters off of school campuses.

I was in So Cal over the weekend and the thing that stood out was the military discount signs posted in restaurants and other businesses. And to my surprise, I even saw one in a gay dance club. biggrin.gif A lot of businesses in cities across America without a military presence offer discounts to military personnel. Frisco is definitely in the minority.

And despite what some might think, we have our share of Conservatives here. The outspoken morons in office (the board of stupidvisors) and on TV don't represent all of San Francisco.

Best of luck to you Providence.

The closing of military bases in the Bay Area had very little to do with politics (Clinton loved SF, and came here often, unlike Dubya) and everything to do with cost. It is common sense that in a time when a huge military isn't needed that one would close the most expensive bases to operate first.

Allen, when you said you were in SoCal, I assume that you were in San Diego, right? It isn't surprising that local businesses there would offer military discounts. SD's economy depends quite a bit on its military for support. Also, given the number of military personnel thereabouts, I would expect to see signs and ads offering discounts to GIs. Go to any town near a military base, and you'll see those signs. The Bay Area's military town is Fairfield, and you'll see signs there.

And just to confuse you even more, I'm an army brat and a registered Republican here in the City and County of San Francisco.
