One of the most important and influential figures in the history of the NBA has passed away at the age of 89.

As a coach and GM, he guided the celtics to 16 NBA titles. He shrewdly made deals that landed the Celtics Bill Russell, Robert Parrish, Kevin McHale and Larry Bird, who he drafted even though Bird still had one more year of college. We all know how that worked out.

John Feinstein's book about him, Let Me Tell You a Story, is one of the truly great reads about the early days of the NBA and Red's approach to the game. Red ranks with John Wooden as a father of modern basketball.
