Well the nations longest current home court winning streak is alive and well, and so are the Gonzaga Bulldogs after they man handled cross town rival Eastern Wash. University last night at the Kennel, 90-75. 41 games won in a row now at the Kennel. Zags looked and played much, much better than they had in two previous exhibition outings. Heytfelt looked great, derek Raivio was on for the most part, and Mallon and Pargo, and Cespedes all looked solid. Coach Few was aprehensive about the Zags based on their somewhat lackluster efforts in the exhibtions a few nights prior, but said he was very pleased and releived with the effort brought to the Kennel last night. I think this team is going to do really well once again, and there is such a good group of guys from last year. Just the other day Few was quoted here in the paper as saying the '07 crop of Zags will be the best ever!! Now thats' sayin something. GO ZAGS!!!

Zags will be in the spotlight tonight (on ESPN I believe) as they will take on Rice in game #2 from the Spokane Arena at 9:00pm, west coast time, midnight back east which sucks...I wish they would have gotten the first game at 6:00pm. It won't be sold out but it should be a larger crowd than what the MAC holds. Lets GO ZAGS!

The Zags looked good in wins over Rice and Baylor. Josh Hyveldt is looking very strong in the middle. He's going to be a special talent for Gonzaga.

You are correct. Heytfeldt looks like he is going to be a key component to the Zags success this year. I have been very impressed by him thus far. He even has some moves in him that remind us of Eroll Knight. I think the Zags are gonna be a tough team to play against this year. Still miss MO though, but we are in good hands with the likes of Raivio, Mallon and company.

I'm already impressed with freshman Matt Bouldin from Colorado. I wonder if he will crack the starting lineup anytime soon.

Me too. The Zags just destroyed the UTSA Roadrunners last night. It wasn't even close. 92-48. Heytfeldt looked good too. They look rather deep at this point, and its great seeing Raivio back to his old form with being able to nail 3 pointers regularly. I can't wait until Duke at MSG. GO ZAGS!!!

6:00pm tonight can't come soon enough for me. Zags in an article in my paper here today said " this is why we come to Gonzaga to play" explaining some of the hoopla, and much of the excitement over the game at Madison Sqaure Garden tonight against North Carolina. ESPN-2. Be there or be sqaure. GO ZAGS!!!

Gonzaga just knocked off North Carolina in the Semifinals of the NIT 80-72 behind sensational ( and hot) sophomore Josh Heytvelt and sharp shooting Freshman Matt Bouldin. Along with great Defense and poised play from Pargo, the Zags clearly were the better team than highly overrated #2 North Carolina.
For all the Zags critics who asserted ( more like hoped) Gonzaga would fall from the elite of college basketball with the departure of Morrsion and company need to find a muzzle when discussing Zag basketball. With major recruiting classes coming and and the young talent on the roster, Gonzaga is without question one of the ten best PROGRAMS in college basketball. That's not changing anytime soon either as this could be the most entertaining and fluid Zag basketball of all time.

Zags look really good. At first, I was a bit nervous because UNC was running and gunning. Then Few made the best chance of the game: He played four guards with Heytvelt.
That's why Mark Few gets paid the big bucks. haha..

I've got to say that Mark Few is practically a genius. I don't know how Gonzaga continues to have such an incredible basketball program every year. There's no way this little school from Spokane should be beating teams like North Carolina routinely but they continue to do it. I am very impressed. I really thought the Zags would have a severe drop-off when they lost Morrison. Nope.
I don't think anyone could have forecast a Preseason NIT final between Gonzaga and Butler. I love it.
hockeyTom
Nov 23 2006, 08:41 AM
Your right about Few buddy. The reason they keep doing so well is because we are getting such good crops of basketball players committing here now, because of the past successes, thanks to the likes of Morrison, Turiaf, Dickau, and company. And Few was saying that next years group of Zags may be the best EVER, if you can believe that. Gonzaga has put Spokane on the map. You can't even get a ticket when they play here at their MAC, so all of their home games and all of their away games are carried by local tv. We have become Zagaholics here, and are loving every minute of it. GO ZAGS!!! You make us proud!!!!

Nov 23 2006, 08:46 AM
Thanks Gym. You are right. The word on this years crop of the Zags is that they have the chance to be something special. Looks like whoever is saying this, is right. I couldn't agree with you more about Josh Heytfeldt. He is HOT!!!!!

Last night on my local news I was watching the sports report, and Dennis Patchin ( sports anchor) is talking about the Zags/Butler game this afternoon, and he says, " and I predict the Bulldogs will win," and Richard Brown one of the main anchors at the station, just burst out laughing in the background, and completely lost it. I did too, the reason being of course, is that both Gonzaga and Butler are called the Bulldogs. So, in this case, GO ZAGS!!!!!! 4:00pm, ESPN-2 baby. Gonna be there...

Nov 25 2006, 08:28 AM
My hats off to Butler, who looked far more interested in the game than did my Zags. I wonder if they had some letdown after that big emotional win over North Carolina the night before. A learning lesson for Gonzaga I think. In comments in my paper today, Few said he wasn't at all happy with the effort or performance of Gonzaga, and called it "apathy." I would agree. However its back to some home business as the Idaho Vandals come into the Kennel tomorrow I think....

According to an article in the Spokane Spokesman-Review it sounds like this Saturdays huge matchup between the Huskies and the Zags may be the last for awhile. The Husky Coach sure makes it sounds like he isn't as interested as he used to be in the yearly matchup, and said the difficulty of his teams conferance has alot to do with this decision. He said the talks between the two schools on any possibility of any more year matchups is "unsettled." I guess now even more important for the Zags to send the doggies home with their tail between their legs! Go Zags! Incidentally Derek Raivio was named both Player of the Week, and Player of the month. Right on Derek. Now, beat those damn dogs!

Congrats are in order to Georgia who completely outclassed and outplayed the Zags at just about every level. Gonzaga's defense was horrible, and thats putting it mildly. They have alot of questions to be answered before they even think about Duke. Gonzaga is once again, inconsistent. Win one lose one, lose one, win one.

Remains to be seen about the WCC...and how well the Zags do, first they have quite a few tough battles to deal with first. They will have to play much much better defense and stop the turnovers to have any chance against Duke. Not too much in the press here since the loss.

Good article by John Blanchette here in the Spokesman-Review this morning. Credit to Duke who played a smothering defense. Ravio and Heytfelt were almost totally and ineffectively shut down. There were some bright spots for Gonzaga, with Pargo, and Kuso, but for the first time since Dec. of 2002, two back to back losses for us. Ouch!!! I do think we will win the WCC this year, but its not going to be as easy as it has been in th epast, and even if we do stumble more this year, there is still next year when Few says we have our best class EVER!!! Woo-Hoo.

Today at 3:00pm on ESPN-2 is where I will be, as its the annual "Battle in Seattle" game against Nevada. The Zags know they will need to play a good game today, and sound like they are really hungry for a win. Nevada in its comments said they know Gonzaga will play them tough, and that they are a very good basketball team. Go ZAGS!

That Nevada-Gonzaga one was a great one today. It felt like a game in March.
Nevada is just an amazing road team.... definitely one of the top road teams in the country. I was so impressed with the Wolf Pack, especially after Fazekas fouled out and Nevada still was able to come from behind and get the win, 82-74. The Pack has now won 11 straight regular-season road games and was coming off a win at Akron, in which they snapped the Zips' 21-game home win streak.
