Just drove by a home about a quarter of a mile from my house with police tape all over, and tons of cop cars, and it turns out it's Sean Taylor's home of the Washington Redskins....He was shot twice early this morning by an intruder....
Very strange considering this is nice part of town without too much crime of this nature....

I just saw the shocking headline on msnbc....good Lord. I hope he pulls through!!! Awful news...

As a Redskin fan, this is just incredible news, incredible because it pushes losing so far to the side.

I was stunned when I heard about this and don't know when I'll be un-stunned.

Sean Taylor "Clinging To Life"

Richard Sharpstein, who has represented Sean Taylor in legal matters in the past and is a friend of the family, said moments ago that the player's life is hanging in the balance in the hospital. Sharpstein, speaking from the hospital, said Taylor is "nonresponsive and unconscious" and the doctors are "worried about a possible brain injury or death."

Sharpstein, who has been with Taylor's family at the hospital much of the day, said that there are major worries that Taylor may have lost oxygen to the brain, and that no other procedures are planned for right now. "They're waiting to see if he comes to," Sharpstein said. He was shot in the groin/thigh area near the femoral artery and lost copious amounts of blood. The intruders then retreated and Sean was airlifted to the trauma center and endured several hours of surgery, Sharpstein said.

Taylor is in intensive care, Sharpstein said, and his girlfriend and child were not injured in the attack. Sharpstein said Taylor was sleeping when he heard a noise in the living room. The intruder or intruders were at his bedroom and Taylor reached for a machete or other form of knife he keeps nearby in case of emergency, and two shots were fired, with one striking his leg.

"Right now he's clinging to life and we're all praying he makes it," Sharpstein said.

Sharpstein said there have been numerous break ins, or break in attempts, on Taylor's house in recent weeks.

According the the Post, Sean is responsive after surgery.

Hopefully this is true!

If there have been "numerous" break-ins/break-in attempts on his house in recent weeks, what's going on? Is his house in a crime-ridden area? Is he flaunting his wealth and almost daring criminals to attack? Does he not have some sort of security system, or a guard? And why on earth would he not move somewhere else after, say, the second break-in attempt, especially with a child in the house?

Palmetto Bay is a very nice suburb of Miami...Average price of the homes in the city is around $750,000 or so...
We have very good friends who live 4 doors down from him...These are all 5000+ sq foot homes on 1-3 acres of land...
Having a home on Old Cutler Rd carries some prestige....

I don't think this was just some random break-in frankly, since he's been in trouble before, and hangs with the rough crowd he grew up with....

OMG...just waking up and seeing the news on ESPN. I knew he was still critical but after hearing that he had squeezed a nurses hand and was a bit more responsive I was optimistic. 24 years old...thats a damn shame. RIP Sean.

I wonder what the NFL and/or the Redskins would have done had they been scheduled to play last night on MNF or if Taylor had been shot Sunday morning?

I have to kind of react with a yawn to the news of Taylor's death. It's hard to feel sorry for an NFL player who'd been fined a lot for dirty play and late hits, along with also pleading guilty to weapons charges of his own after he threatened to kill a guy with a gun at a party in the past. And I seriously doubt if this was a random break-in twice in the same week in an upscale part of south Florida.

Do the police have any leads on who shot and killed Taylor?
They were saying even yesterday that this was accidental...
NFL is having a ROUGH year, jeez.

Despite his troubles, I feel badly for his family and people who cared about him.
Not sure he deserved to be shot and killed.
mdterp01
First and foremost, no one deserves to be shot and killed in their own home. What I am hearing a lot from Comcast Sportsnet and Redskins Radio and the radio stations around DC is how much Sean Taylor matured since the birth of his daughter. And if we're going to criticize his troubled past, lets get it CORRECT shall we. His weapons charges stemmed from an incident in which he went after guys who allegedly stole HIS ATV's. This was not at a party. Yes he was a hot head when he came into the league but the sentiment I have been hearing, and which I will put more credence in, rather than just what is generally heard in a bio or negative media story is that the sky was the limit for him. He was selected for the pro bowl last year and was on his way to being selected again this year. Joe Gibbs commented that he really got it together this year in terms of not blowing cover assignments and staying late to study films. One of the Comcast Sportsnet reporters talked about how shy and quiet he was but that she felt honored that she was one of the few reporters that he allowed to really get to know him. ALL I have heard today is how great of a guy he was, how big of a heart he had, how much having his daughter gave him new perspective on life, and how he was really on his way to doing great things. So what...he made some mistakes in the past. No one is perfect and he proved that a person can change and prioritize whats important.

Of course one must speculate if it wasn't random and the old "live by the sword, die by the sword" comes up but the man was a new father and this is just absolutely senseless.

Sad story. I must admit when I first heard about it I thought domestic violence and not robbery. Seemed odd that someone would try and rob the same house twice in an upscale neighbourhood and also that he was the only one shot and not the gf. Suspicious nature I guess.
Still sad and I hope the police catch the person who did it.
Maddog
Very sad. I'm also thinking that because he was shot in the leg, it's possible the shooter was just trying to maim him.

Wow...I watched his funeral yesterday and cried at various different times. I have never liked the Deadskins but you know this truly transcends the sport because a man has lost his life in a ridiculous fashion. I applaud the commentator on CBS NFL kickoff this weekend who called out the callous remarks of those who said they "weren't surprised" when Sean Taylor was shot. I've heard far too many people make that comment, and as it turns out...Sean Taylor did not know his victims. The latest I've heard is that Sean Taylor's half sister asked permission to have a party at his house, and was dating the cousin of one of the suspects. So, somehow they thought they had a target in Sean Taylor's house, not Taylor himself. Regardless, the man was sleeping in his own damn house and it was just senseless. I applaud Dan Snyder for arranging for the entire Redskins organization being down there, and for his $500,000 contribution to the Sean Taylor Memorial Fund set up in trust for his beautiful daughter Jackie.

Such a sad sad tragedy, but one that occurs every day. We are made aware of it more because Sean was a celebrity/football player but we see it every night on the news damn near where young black men are shot and some child or children are now left fatherless.

I saw a clip from the funeral of Drew Rosenhaus. Even at a funeral, he comes off as sleazy, phony, smarmy. It's unreal. If ever a person needed to shut up and go away...
Bryan
And why do young black men keep shooting other young black men? They're saying now that the motive was robbery, that the suspects had either been in the house before, or on the premises....Are so many of these young thugs just jealous of sports stars and rap action heroes? Or is it the rampant materialism that dominates sports and entertainment and these communities. Remember Oprah's answer to why she wasn't starting a school here in the USA? She said it was because all the young people want here is new sneakers...

I have to TOTALLY agree about Rosenhaus. When he broke down and started crying talking about Sean being a hero for saving Jackie I felt it but didn't want to think it. However, all I could think of was that bitch Susan Smith's crocodile tears when she knew damn well she was the one who sent her children plunging into a watery grave. Yes, there is something very sleazy and phony about Drew but hopefully his comments were genuine and heartfelt.

Bryan...there are so many variables and factors going into it that its ridiculous. There are books out there that give many reasons for explaining it but I think that Bill Cosby sums it up best in talking about the lack of father's in the lives of black men and lets be honest, new school hip hop has done nothing positive for the direction of the black community. Hip hop in its ORIGINAL form was actually sending a message, and there are still artists out there who try and preserve the meaning of the origin of hip hop. But, thats not what sells. People want to see girls shakin their ass and they want to see Bentley's and Mercedes Benz cars and private jets and yachts and bling, etc, etc, etc. Its a culture of violence gone totally out of control, and its an upbringing of many of these young men who have no value for their own life, let alone someone else's.
