Full Version: Expanding USA pro sports

The recent Phillies win of the "World Championship of Baseball" and the possibility that a new administration may ease relations with other nations that could compete in USA pro sports (such as Cuba and Venezuela in baseball), begs the question "Will the pro leagues in the USA take the leap?."

The MLB, NBA and NHL are all in Canada. If not for the weather the NFL would probably have absorbed the CFL by now - but who wants to see another slew of teams dressed like polar bears playing football on a field that has a surface that can look like a hockey rink in winter, unless you build expensive domes in every city.

And China would definitely support several basketball teams if the NBA could establish profitable teams there. Transporting a basketball team to play intermural games would be cheaper than for other sports with larger teams.

Nations in the middle east and eastern europe have a much longer tradition in wrestling than we do. If our country starts talking to them instead of bombing them, there is a distinct possibility that USA athletes will be competing with them more. Will the official bodies start arranging regular meets between the best collegiate wrestlers and Iranians and Syrians, among others? Is it far too soon to even think about it?

Does anyone know what efforts are in the works? I know this is more a political question than a sports one right now. But my point is that it looks like this may become a sports and logistics question more than politic.

I can't speak for sports such as wrestling, but as far as the major sports leagues in North America the biggest hurdles to expansion to other continents, as I see them, are travel time to overseas venues and the scheduling headaches that would occur; money (duh); and an even further dilution of the talent that would be caused by additional teams.
