I've been looking for a an open gym, league, or semi-serious team that is gay-friendly or gay...well, you know what I mean...in NYC. I found a team made up of some gay men (reality bball?) but their team sounds too competitive for me (some semi-pro players on their team) so I was hoping someone knew of something a little more casual.

My experience consists of mostly just pick up games at the gym, against mostly presumably straight men, which is fine, but I just think it would be more fun , comfortable, and less intimidating for me to play against a more "diverse" group of guys.

P.S. any information at all relating to my question would be GREATLY appreciated! thank you

Hey otd! Welcome to Outsports. I play lots of gay basketball and want to encourage you in your search. I don't think NYC has an open gym like other cities. Chicago, SF, LA-Long Beach, San Diego, Sacramento, and a couple other places have them.

Yes, NY-Reality is a pretty intimidating team, they usually compete for any gay tournament they play in. But I would encourage you to attend the gay basketball tournaments, there are all sorts of levels from rec to the top teams. Usually a tournament has a rec division that is lots of fun. You do not have to field your own team, I started playing with a team in San Francisco years ago, even though I have never lived there, and now I have friends from gay basketball all around the country.

If you want email or pm me, I will be glad to give you more info on the gay tournaments. There is plenty to do besides basketball, and I have heard that some guys even get a bit lucky on the trips. wink But it is mostly about the basketball, for all levels of ability.
