Farming wood is not a bad idea, especially if done on land that was deforested by human activity to begin with. You don't have to misunderstand the causes of global warming to support that.

But any farming that replaces wildlands almost by definition decreases diversity and renders whatever is grown there more vulnerable to any evolving threat. That's the danger of genetically modified plants and animals as well, by the way, which are the most likely "crop" to be grown in their place.

Managed foresting may already have contributed to such a loss of diversity, and may be part of the increasing loss of forests due to natural diseases.

But I think proper farm foresting of diverse naturally occurring species is much better than fallow land.

I'm so disappointed with our "blizzard". We were supposed to have got 1-3" of snow. We just got a slight hint of snow flurries.
Travelpat
We FINALLY do have a decent amount of snow on the ground in Toronto, not because of any one huge snowfall though but it seems an inch or two every other day. Last week when we were supposed to get hit by the major storm that whacked you guys in Chicago etc, we got 4-5" and that was it. Mind you that is still the most snow we had gotten at one time in almost 2 years.

So the changes in the jetstream - at least partially caused as a result of global warming - have resulted in some places getting more snow than they are used to - Hello New York! - but other areas - especially here north of the border - getting a lot less. In fact if it wasn't for areas that get whacked by lake effect snow the lack of snowfall in general dumps has been alarmingly small the last couple of years up here.

In fact it has been so long since we've gotten a major dump in Toronto - panic set in before last week's expected storm - and we closed all the schools in advance. When we woke up and only had a minor dump people wondered why? (It was the first time in 12 years schools had closed in Toronto due to snow - that is how whacky our weather has become).

But rather than ending this with a rant that would get Crew Chief all mad at me I'll end with humour from a CBC show a couple of years ago. This is how soft we've gotten up here due to so little snow over the last few years..

Please stop spreading such rubbish. The jet stream pattern changes are NOT due to this mythical thing you refer to as "global warming." First, the same patterns existed in the late 1970s and the mid-1980s. Second, an exceptionally strong, presently ongoing La Niña, which is a cooling of the Pacific equatorial ocean waters, is notorious for bringing a cold and snowy weather to the U.S.
Travelpat
The swings in the jetstream are 'unprecedented' according to the talking heads at Environment Canada.

Obviously these idiots were born after the late 1970s, a period of brutal winters in many parts of the Midwest. Months of endless snow, massive storms and blizzards, and bone-chilling cold that makes today's cold look balmy, were prevalent throughout much of the U.S. The culprit? The Jet Stream had dipped way south, as it's doing now, has done countless times before, and will do countless times again.

BTW, this current strong La Niña isn't the first time we've had one.
millerbeach
We're expecting a pretty big thaw this weekend, CC. More irrefutable proof of global warming. Let's all now watch your head explode in three...two...ONE! laugh.gif
Crew Chief
Uh, no we're not. Temps in the mid-30s over a 2' snow pack is, at BEST, a moderate thaw. Next week sees it a tad warmer.

BTW, yet more evidence of "global warming"—we have had the FEWEST winter days above freezing ever recorded in Chicago weather history record-keeping.
millerbeach
You, my friend, are more predictable than my Seiko watch...thanks for you being you! laugh.gif

Actually, it can't. Science can only make more accurate short and long-term (meaning 2 weeks or so) weather forecasts. Other than that, what's happening is simply called "winter," and part of weather patterns beyond our control.
Well low and behold science has connected the increase in greenhouse gasses and the intensity of the rain and snow.....I guess it's just not winter after all.

Consider the source. Enough said.

Any credibility your claim might have had disappeared completely with a warped and one-sided source like that.

Huffington Post. Enough said.

The Huffington Post simply re-printed an article published by someone else. After all, CC, you invented the practice with the lifting of talking points from Faux News. laugh.gif

Thank you for proving my point and admitting your hypocrisy and that of the Left.

News post from Foxnews.com = false, fake, incorrect.

News post from Huffingtonpost.com = true, accurate, correct

The stupid hypocrisy of you and your ilk on the left is both blinding and blatant.

Sorry, but if we are to be consistent here, and leave it up to a sane mind like my own to be so, then the post mentioned above from huffpo cannot be accepted as fact. Therefore, it isn't. (Never mind the reality that it is, in fact, a bunch of BS anyway.)

Once again your brandy and vicodin have poisoned your ability to think clearly. There's a big difference between Huffington Post and Faux News. One links to established, reputable sources. Faux just makes shit up or quotes sites that make it up.

I'm against all sources that claim to be news and instead use it for their own political purposes. When HuffPost posts opinion it's identified as such, if it weren't I wouldn't frequent the site.

Sorry, you guys can't get out of this now. You have been caught in your blatant hypocrisy.

Just cuz you think it doesn't make it true.

Sorry, you guys don't get to have the rules not apply to you but apply to everyone else.

Caught red-handed you were in a blatant act of hypocrisy and inconsistency. From that there is no denying. Period.

Prove what you are talking about or shut up, CC. You're great at slinging arrows, not so good at proving your point. It's put up or shut up time, sweetie. Your clock is out of ticks.

I love it! Uberleftists caught in their own web of hypocrisy and they get hypersensitive now.

I've proved it already. The truth hurts. You can't handle the truth!

This isn't proof. It's more desperate claims of bullshit. When winters see less snow—dry conditions, that is—they claim it's "global warming," "climate change," or whatever the political term of the week is. When there's more snow than normal, they claim the same thing. So which is it? Neither! It's simply nature doing its thing, with no regard to Man.

BTW, where were these same idiots in the late 1970s when many areas experienced record snowfalls that dwarf even today's?

Proof is proof.

Sorry, but logically and scientifically, it is NOT "proof." It cannot be "proof" if the same thing occurred at other times, contradicting that which is claimed in the present.

Your logic is there, but it is simplistic and leaves out too much to be credible.

Friend of ours planted cabbage seeds over a week ago.

I planted vegetable seeds in the middle of March last year - earliest I've ever done that. My partner thought they'd get frostbitten. They were fine.

When spring crops can be planted in February we'll be getting close to an endless growing season in the midatlantic.

Lucky us...more damn snow accompanied by frigid temperatures and bone-chilling winds. mad.gif mad.gif

Aw shucks, Eddie! You should have joined me down here in Naples! (hee-hee) I am getting ready to plan my garden, which is about the only thing that gets me through these final, brutal days of winter. But on the bright side, my pansies made it through the winter and have already "greened up", so I am ahead of the curve when it comes to my garden...must be that global warming! (LOL)
