As soon as I heard this story I thought it was a fake. That they guy driving the runaway Prius had recently filed for bankruptcy, owned money on the Prius in question, and has a history of making insurance claimed for items stolen from his property... it adds up to a publicity hoax that the media bought because of the Toyota backlash.

I have to admit when I saw the story I wondered why he didn't put it in neutral like the officers instructed him to.

Perhaps we have a reason now.
