The puzzlingly sad career of former world #1 golfer David Duval took another bizarre turn yesterday when he withdrew from the Greater Hartford Open after shooting an 83, leaving him in last place. No official reason was given for the withdrawal, but Duval claimed a bout of vertigo had severely impacted his play. This was the guy many thought would be Tiger's main rival for years to come. From ESPN.com:

QUOTE
Duval, the 13-time tour winner, has slumped all season, making just four of 17 cuts.

The lowlight of Duval's first round was a 9 on the 12th hole. At 13-over for the day, he finished eight strokes behind club pro Suzy Whaley.

The sports psychologist who has been working with Duval was recently quoted as saying Duval is back to being able to compete on a level reminiscent of his golden days, and the 63 he recently shot would seem to bear this out, but there still seems to be some obstacle he hasn't been able to overcome. Duval has said he physically tired of answering questions about his dismaying slump.
