wow.. the Finns are simply impressive. TEAM PLAY. That's what it's all about. Those guys don't have the big names that other countries have (like Jagr, Sakic, Iginla, Ovechkin, etc..) but they have a TEAM.

They clog up the ice, and the other team gets frustrated. The Russians got very frustrated early on from the lack of room on the ice, and have been invisible offensively. They miss the net on shots on the PP, and the Finns are hustling.

It's 3-0 after 2, and i have a hard time seeing the Russians come back and tie it up. Who knows though, they have the firepower.

Both Finland-Sweden and Russia-Sweden would be great matchups for the final. Of course, Finland-Sweden would have the biggest rivalry, and i'm not really hoping the Finns win their first Olympic gold medal. All the other big name teams have won it before.

Heck, to think they are doing this without Kiprusoff (who must be regretting his decision to stay home), it's impressive.

I only got two out of four right in the quarterfinal predictions but I'll try again. I'll say it will be Sweden vs. Finland for the gold.
DING DING DING! biggrin.gif

I'm surprised that neither game was particularly competitive. Finland has been amazing the entire tournament. I think they'll win the gold. I'll predict Russia to get the bronze, because the Czechs just seem to be underachievers right now.

The bronze medal game is at 2:30 pm ET tomorrow. Since it's on NBC and it's just one of the events on tap for that timeslot of coverage (1-6 pm), it may only be live in the East and Central time zones again. Sunday's gold medal game is at 8 am ET and no other events are on tap for that time, so it might be live everywhere.

Finland impressed me big time today, not that they haven't already, but to shut down Ovechkin like that. No way Sweden will be able to stop them.

Well i just finished watching the Russia-Czech game, and i must say that after Canada, Russia is the team that disappointed the most. With all that firepower, they managed only 1 goal (ok, 2 with that empty netter) in the last 3 games. Shutout twice for medals.. OUCH.

With guys like Datsyuk, Ovechkin, Malkin, Kovalchuk, Gonchar, etc.. you'd think they'd be able to score goals. ohmy.gif

Bravo to the Czechs for the Bronze!

I didn't see any of the bronze medal game but I am surprised. Russia seems to have young talent. Four years from now they may well do better. The Czechs have really been unpredictable. They were the same at the 2004 World Cup as well. Underachieving at times and then suddenly getting back into the groove.

Gee, do I root for Forsberg or Niittymaki tomorrow? Decisions, decisions... biggrin.gif

It wasn't that exciting. The body checking was interesting though, as the Russians were hitting just about anything and everything, but the Czechs responded. I noted that after the game, Jim Lampley said NBC would be showing the gold medal game on Sunday morning "live at 8:00am et," so imagine my surprise when I found out its being taped for the west coast. Thank you NBC. Your coverage won't be missed by me. rolleyes.gif

Congratulations to the Swedes for winning the gold. Fooled me! I really didn't think they could stop Finland, but then Finland doesn't have Lundqvist in goal.
Joe in Philly
It was close the entire way. Sweden took control of the game for a time during the second period when they forced Finland to take penalties which led to two power play goals. Their size seemed to play a part in that. Finland didn't play their best, though.
