When the HELL are we gays/lesbians going to wake up and END all this childish squabbling?
The Out Games. The Gay Gaymes. What about UNITING? I realize our stupid U.S. government has f***ed over our once great country. That's due to the arrogance and selfeshness of heterosexuals.
As Gays and Lesbians, let us NOT follow in their footsteps and stoop WAAAAAAY down to THEIR level. Mentally speaking, the GLBT community worldwide is FAR more intelligent than that. It IS a scientific fact!
THIS is the problem in the Gay comminity here in South Florida: NO one wants to "come together" and work for that which best helps the community at large. Every group/person has their OWN agenda to advance themselves, to hell with everyone else.
It's no wonder we GLBTs have NO marriage rights here in the disgarced USA. Too much bitchiness, too many EGOs, and too much "moving backwards" in time/conservatism.
Wake up Gay America! Let's move forward together and lose the crap we grew up with: heterosexual ideas! That sh*t screws everything up! MOVE FORWARD!

David,
First off, let me welcome you to Outsports. As the unofficial greeter, it is my duty to.....well, figure it out wink . I hope you enjoy it here.
Now, about your post....your points have some merit. However, this is the same sentiment we've heard for quite some time. Let me ask you a question. What caused you to post something so strong? What was the precipitating event? I ask because making a bold post like that right off the bat takes some
cajones . Be prepared for some responses that may be equally as strong.
Ok...enough of the dissection. Have a good evening, and I look forward to seeing more of your posts!

Maybe because the man speaketh the truth. Great points made about unity and pointing to the division even within the gay sports community is an excellent illustration of the conflicts which are (for the most part)created and fueled by egos and egomaniacs. To be sure - these kind of divisions occur in all communities. Sadly, it is much easier for people to advance their own agendas rather than band together in a common cause.

Is this topic really worthy of its own thread? While there are valid points, it doesn't really seem that the discussions about divisions in the community (outside that of the sports world) are really appropriate here. A thread was already created for the discussion in terms of Out and Gay Games. Another thread on this topic maybe appropriate for divisions in sports in general.
To me this thread pertains to issues the author has with the "gay community" as a whole when it comes to organization in general.
Venting on his anger/issues against his own country (USA) may be best suited for a general political discussion on a political forum.

Don't you have to be appointed to this position?
By the way,I think the average GLBT person is just trying to survive in a world that still has a lot of hostility against us.I know I certainly do not live in a gay-friendly area but I'm not going to concentrate all of my energy on trying to make it more accepting.

The GLBT population does not really constitute a "community," which generally refers to a group of people that shares a common set of values. The most salient (or only?) value that we share as GLBT people is the desire not to be persecuted. We thus bind together despite our differences, not because of our similarities. The fault lines are ever present and need only a small tremor to rupture.

I salute your intentions, David, but reality rarely supports ideals. The fact of the matter is: there is no universal agreement amongst gay people (the bi and trans entities notwithstanding) how to live and conduct our lives. And further seperation from this mass anonymous group you label as "heterosexuals" doesn't help a thing. We unite in our similarities not in our differences.
United communites are rare though thankfully our very nature seems to drive us towards Unity at times. Religious differences, class differences, moral differences, you name it - it'll divide us. What we're missing both as a community and as, well, the human race, is a more evolved spirituality. Again, as Ghandi said, "The problem with humanity is that it's not in its right mind."

I think it is a great post. Many of us gays hate themselves because that is what they have been trained to do from childhood by their surrounding family and culture. Self-esteem means standing up for your self-worth and unity and for your fellow gay athletes, in my opinion. But, I don't think we should indulge in the silly bickering about what gay group is better than the other. And, be careful about the temporarily satisfying psychological tool of projection that casts your own self-loathing onto other well-meaning, if fallible, people. A little teasing is traditional in sports, admittedly. But, gay rage can be pretty destructive and discouraging. Also, I don't think we should exclude or insult many straight athletes who long to love and admire us in their own way.

HD is funny - lecturing us all for the ongoing struggle between FGG and GLISA - as if his non-involvement gives him an Olympian perch from which to hand down scoldings. Maybe, just maybe, you would understand better if you would have been involved!! This is one of those good vs evil, right vs wrong, things where non-involvement is no excuse, and neutrality means favoring the evil/wrong side. At least the greedheads and their shills have understandable motives - HD just wasn't interested enough to educate himself, and I can't understand that at all.
