Haven't seen any promotion for this year's sports conference at MIT, so here it is. I understand Cyd's going to be there representing Outsports. Last year's was awesome.

It's definitely spring here by then... early spring. Mud season.

Glad to see someone has put up the conference info! Everyone should consider going, really. It was great last year and I think this year is going to come together even better with a lot more people.

Also, if there are any college (or even high school) athletes, competitive or recreational, who are interested, please contact me if you want to get involved. We are working on a project for the College Athletics panel at the conference and we need imput and stories from college aged sports people. Even if you can't make it to the conference you can still contribute, or I can just put you on our email list and keep you in the loop.

Thanks,

Is this open to all, even those of us who just like sports but who may not be all that active in a particular sport at the moment? I live in Boston and would love to attend. Is it more for sports organizers than average guys and weekend warrior types?

Yes, the conference is open to all. Check out the schedule and panel discussion topics that are now up on the website. If you are interested in anything there, then you will get a lot out of the conference. Besides seeing some great speakers and engaging in great discussions, it is also a way to find ways to get involved with local or national sports groups and see what you can do in your community LGBT athletics. (we also have fun!)

It's not just for "official" sports people, but anyone who enjoys sport and wants to help promote gays in sport.

In another thread, Sports4All posted

The following was reported on outsports:
QUOTE
While Boston Mayor Thomas Menino was supposed to give the keynote address at the kickoff event Friday night, he sent his gay liaison to talk instead. The liaison said that Menino “went home ill” that afternoon, so couldn’t make it. Openly gay Tempe, Ariz., Mayor Neil Giuliano was standing next to me when this was announced and said, \"We say the same thing.\"
From the Boston Globe:
By Stephen Smith, Globe Staff, 3/31/2004:
QUOTE
Looking pale and bound for City Hall, Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino checked out of Brigham and Women's Hospital yesterday morning after being treated for a painful intestinal condition. He pledged to resume his typically hectic work routine.
Mayor Menino has been huge supporter of the gay community in Boston, the above reference in the notes posted on Outsports by Cyd Zeigler Jr are in poor taste.

What was the purpose of the statement?

Yeah, Mayor Menino really was sick and hospitalized over the weekend -- the print edition of the Globe even published a nice graphic of the human intestine, with interpretive diagrams and text about various possible sources of Menino's IPB Image discomfort.

Neil, having been a mayor himself, was no doubt just busting balls... wink

Cyd at Outsports
1) I didn't know he was really sick and 2) I thought it was a funny, very telling, comment by Neil. Throughout the weekend, I heard a few "oh, he couldn't come because he got sick" excuses, so I thought it was a funny comment. I definitely did not mean anything about Menino's support of gay people. I was there last year when he did give the opening address and found his comments very welcoming.

I did a 'Find All' on this one and did not get a match for the words "sorry" or "apologize" in here.

The article clearly insinuates that you did not believe him, Cyd, despite others' comments. I think an apology is due, especially, if this article sits out there for the world to view and he happens to catch wind of it.

Pathetic response by the author of the notes who made the remark about Mayor Menino.

The author defends his comments by saying "I thought it was a funny telling comment by Neil."

His response to the remarks are the same as his notes: poorly written and full of ignorance.
