The CBC quotes Sydney Daily Telegraph reports that promoters plan to re-unite the competitors from the Men's 100m sprint from the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

"... the race would be run next year in Seoul, after the 2004 Summer Games in Athens. An unnamed South Korean businessmen is offering a $1-million prize to the winner.

Promoters are hoping to get all eight men who ran in the 1988 Olympic final to participate in the race."

The competitors would include an assortment of disgraced, steroid-enhanced sprinters, including Ben Johnson, Linford Christie and Carl Lewis.

A rematch of 1988? So it's an old-timers race, then.

In case anyone doesn't remember, (Joe in Philly), the 1988 Men's 100m final was the race where a yellow-eyed, roid-raging Ben Johnson smoked Carl Lewis, his rival, with a time of 9.79 seconds, completely obliterating Carl's world record. Ben was stripped of his medal the following day when he tested positive for steroids, and Carl was declared the winner. It was HUGE news at the time because Carl had been telling everyone that Ben was juicing. Of course, there are those in the track & field community that thought Carl was using newer drugs that weren't yet detectable.

I still would watch a rematch, old-timers or not. If nothing more than to see Linford's enormous bouncing bulge in his singlet.

Cool -- maybe if this works, Reebok can bring back "Dan and Dave"!

16 years later, are any of these guys in world class shape? It reminds me of a really bad sitcom episode (probably seinfeld) I suffered through in which they reran a grade school race ... to prove nothing.
