So first off: what are our groundrules here? -- given that NBC will be showing the top events on an 8 hour delay (or so)? SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT

I say don't open the thread if you don't wanna know. After all the results will be all over the internet (god bless it)

Don't read down further if you don't want to know.

Chad Hedrick won our first gold in speedskating.

The USA women's hockey team starts off with a 6-0 win over Switzerland. Of course, if either the USA or Canada loses a game to anyone else it'll be stunning. The USA outshot the Swiss 56-9. The shots were 35-6 after 2 periods but the score was just 2-0.

I know I am so stoked for the hockey games between the mens hockey teams. biggrin.gif I guess they get underway sometime next week I think. Lets go USA! Will be wearing my honorary souvenir t-shirt from the 2002 Olympics, the Official Olympic hockey tee when the men take to the ice for the games.

I heard the USA women beat Switzerland already 6-0 today. Good job gals!!!!! biggrin.gif

But, here's the thing, DCBucky... Say you want to post about something that you saw the night before (taped). You now risk the possibility of seeing something posted for the next night that you didn't want to read until you get a chance to watch the next night's action. In other words, let's pretend that Sasha Cohen wins the gold medal, but I don't know until I see it taped on NBC. Now, let's say I want to post about it the next day. However as I am posting about it the next day, someone is posting about the next day's action. Basically, I cannot post on anything Olympics related because someone wants to be the first to post the results. I guess I will just have to avoid the Olympics threads for the next few weeks.

Maybe we should have a bet between the Canadian hockey team and the USA hockey team. Whichever team loses has to surrender its country or something. tongue.gif

Italy sure is famous for it's historical statues... after the Olympic Hockey tournament, they'll add two more statues to the list:

Derian Hatcher
Chris Chelios

Let's see, faster opponents, bigger ice surface, less physical play. Yep, those defensive selections are solid. rolleyes.gif

A real miracle on ice would be if the US makes it to the medal round.

What a record by the USA team so far:

  • Bode Miller makes a big splash with his mouth and attitude, then makes a big flop in two events
  • Johnny Weir was in silver medal position and then lost his aura
  • Apolo Anton Ohno skidded away a medal unnecessarily trying to win a qualifying heat in his first event
  • Shani Davis refused to participate in the short-track speedskating team pursuit, so the rest of the team is knocked out in the quarterfinals
  • The US men's hockey team (filled with NHL stars) has to rally for a tie with Latvia (filled with no NHL stars) in their first game, which may end up making their medal quest much harder
  • The women's hockey team loses to a team other than Canada, and the best they can hope for is a bronze medal, still their worst-ever showing in international play
  • Lindsey Jacobellis decides to show up the competition in something called \"snowboardcross\" and falls, giving away the gold medal.
Have I left out anyone? An awful lot of Team USA seems to fall under the categories of showboaters, glory hogs and chokers.

I can't recall an Olympics that was so full of whiners & loudmouths, from Chad Hedrick and Bode Miller to Lindsay Jacobellis; I'm going to try to work "pulling a Jacobellis" into conversations to describe someone more interested in fun/style points that in accomplishing a set task.

But this Olympics is also the one that provided us our first extended look at Joey Cheeks, whose accomplishments on the ice are more than than matched by those off the ice, which are magnanimous and a good reminder of the tue spirit of the Olympics.

Mexico City, 1968, comes to my mind.

Are you referring to the "black power" salutes by Tommie Smith and John Carlos, or something else? And those, by the way, are obviously far, far different than anything going on in these Olympics.

Mark Spitz's aqua-tantrum also caused more than a few ripples, and I recall several missteps in the track and field competition as well. Vanity is vanity wherever it appears, however displayed. It's neither team-spirited nor individually admirable and should be discouraged whenever it appears, in whatever form, whether per se or posing behind politics. The Olympics should focus on athletic achievement, not foster egos or politics, and even though both continue to infect the Games, that doesn't mean we mere mortals must suffer either in silence.

In no way would I equate the "black power" salutes by John Carlos and Tommie Smith in Mexico City with the vainglorious showboaters we're seeing this year. Whether one agrees with what they did or not, Carlos' and Smith's actions were part of the broader civil rights movement and were not all about personal gain; Miller and Jacobellis (to name two of the showboaters) are merely in it for themseselves and have already reaped endorsement dollars for their "me, me, me!" attitudes.

I do wish the '68 games were as remembered for the efforst of Madeline Manning, winner of the gold in the women's 800, who later went on to set up shelters for battered women and children.
