Anyone else worried about the safety and security of U.S. athletes at the 2004 Athens Olympics?
Given (1) the extreme anti-Americanism in Greece, (2) the fact that Athens is a notorious haven for terrorists, and (3) the close proximity of Athens to anti-American terror-states in the Middle East -- I'm fearing a horrific disaster that will make Munich 1972 look like a paper cut.
Unless there is a huge turnaround in the world situation by the end of this year, I'm seriously wondering if it is worth risking American lives by sending them to Greece.

I'm more worried that the level of security will distract from the games. There may also be boycotts or other anomalies preventing some athletes from being able to participate putting a permanent asterisk next to any achievements.

Being American of greek descent I was thinking when they first announced that the games would be there that I would want to go. I havent been there since I was 17 and I have relatives there still. But with all thats going on there is no way im stepping foot in the country let alone a plane going there. Greece has been notorious for lax security so I can only imagine what it is like now.
Well im my limited knowledge I have to say though whenever I travel or speak with people overseas, they really dont have a problem with Americans. They do disagree with alot of our politicians but basic Americans I have really felt no animosity.
I still the the French are lame though haha

Do you honestly think that the Bush Administration would admit defeat like that by not sending the athletes?
