Full Version: Reactions to U.S. Athletes

There was a story in the news weeks ago that the USOC advised US athletes against grandstanding after their victories given the feeling abroad that the US is arrogant. (Heck, we are arrogant - particularly our athletes. And I think this advice is long overdue as many of these displays often show poor sportsmanship, in my opinion.) Furthermore, athletes are being advised to not venture outside the Olympic Village in large groups or in obviously American attire. Among the US basketball team, only two big NBA stars have committed to going to the Games. Clearly there is some concern about the safety of Americans at the Olympics this year.

Greece isn't exactly known for being overly aligned with US international policy, particularly with that of the current occupant of the White House. I know the Games are an internaitonal affair and there will be plenty of Americans in the stands at each event, but the majority in attendance will be overwhelmingly non-Americans.

So my question is, what do you think will be the reaction of American athletes (and American citizens) at the Games?

I hate to say this aquaman but I think if the Games were to be held right now, there would be some hostility! Maybe not the outright booing and jeering but probably seething resentment. You're right though. Grandstanding is something the U.S. is known for in the past. I think now though that might change because times are much different now.
