The mascots are actually a private joke of the Athenian Podiatrist Association

I think they're kind of cute. They remind me of Akbar & Jeff.

On the Athens website you can see the mascots for previous Olympics, mostly forgetable ones like Atlanta's IZZY (whatsit?), Lake Placid's RONI (the raccoon), Moscow's predictable bear MISHA and Montreal's predictable beaver AMIK.

Does anyone else think they look a bit androgynous? My vote for the Greek olympic symbol:

Damn, as soon as I saw the news, I rushed to the boards to post, only to find that I was too late. Someone had beaten me to ridiculing poor little Phovos and Athena.
Phovos, Apollo, you know, the one you're talking about when you call someone a "Greek G-d" (Adonis was a mortal, you may think you're talking about him, but you're not). Poor little Phovos isn't very handsome, is he?
But beyond the fact that those two kids are ugly little snots, one of the things mascots are called upon to do these days is be the images of the various sports. Can you see those big feet on gymnasts, those stocky bodies on basketball players, those inflexible torsos on divers?
Oh well, I've been convinced for some time 2004 is gonna suck horribly. Nothing's happened to convince me otherwise.

WOW How creepy, I saw these same creatures in a dream I had back in high school. Only in the dream there was a smaller third one. If these two have a kid I'll freak out. Or maybe go to Athens during the games and see what happens. Cute little bugers aren't they?

These two creatures are weird, whoever they are supposed to be. But some good came out of this thread with sportinlife's posting a link to the Homosex site. There are some very interesting points made there that deserve at least a perusal - and enough hot pix to keep you interested while doing so. The author's argument about the "tyranny of anal sex" is one of the more sensible essays on gay male sexuality I've read in over 30 years of reading the usual nonsense lumped under that heading. Check it out!
