The one we did for Athens is one of our most popular features ever. We are doing one for Torino, and the first weekend's coverage is up.

I will scan the board and pull choice comments from you all.

Thanks!

I believe that Prince William the Hedgehog is in Turin, hobnobbing the royals and dignitaries. You could've gotten him to do a daily log.

While Curling is immensly popular here in Canada, hockey is still the national sport. You gotta remember that Curling has always been an "old people" sport until the last 7 or so years...The Brier (Men's National Championship) became "hip" and "cool" and it was THE party place in March. In the last 7 years that's when the youth explosion actually happened. So Hockey is still and always will be our national sport.

One other note...not sure where to put this one, but I noticed Outsports wants us to email them a link with a picture of a hot Olympic Athlete that should be on their list. My email isn't working for some reason today....

Jeff Buttle - Olympic Bronze Medalist - Men's Figure Skating - CANADIAN

A killer smile, beautiful eyes, and just a guy you know would be fun to hang out with and just shoot the shit. A great Canadian guy who's a hell of a figure skater.
Jim at Outsports
This is a good place to post hot jocks we can add.

And, yes, hockey is still the national sport; we will fix that.

It's interesting what and how we consider hot.

Just see Joey Cheek's picture I wouldn't have ranked him has hot in my book. But after watching is interviews and seeing his personality come out, especially him choking up at the gold medal cermony, plus his charity work, he has become a definite hottie in my book and dreams.

Generally I don't think of the male figure skaters as hot, but after spending 45 minutes at breakfast rating them for straight guys, I wouldn't go kicking Lambiel or Buttle out of bed.
Jim at Outsports
Joey is geeky-hot, which to me beats Jeremy Bloom I-Like-Looking-At-Myself-in-The-Mirror Hot any time. biggrin.gif
richman
for your fill of olympic hotties check out the website of dutch photogropher Ewoud Broeksma:
www.broeksma.com

he has a new calender/magazine featuring members of the Dutch olympic team. the cover is double bronze medalist Erben Wennemars and shortracker Cees Juffermans is also featured.
click on "sport" in the menu and on part 4 you can see a nude of American speedskater Kip Carpenter who is super hot, and on part 7 you have a host of winter olympians including Jan Bos and polish skaters Maciej Ustynowicz & Artur Was.
Jim at Outsports
Do you happen the photog? I am curious as to how he gets these athletes to pose for him?
richman
i have met him but i do not know him personally. he has been photographing athletes for over 10 years and they all seem to strip for him. during the last olympics he released a calender featuring some gold medalists and top athletes from holland.
Jim at Outsports
So I assume he is a well-respected photog since he's at the Games now? Is he gay?
richman
i believe he is gay yes, you can order his calenders online via his website. there are also lots of US skaters that have posed for him

I was reading Cyd's comments in the notebook today about JoinBode.com. Reading the comments by Bode, all I can think about was that Bode does much more than just ski drunk. Maybe I am getting old and the younger generation has a whole different way of speaking, but I could just not make sense out of some of those comments.

The "on authority", makes no sense to me. I understand he was trying to make a buck the system comment, but he can't even frame it well.

I truly hope that with his lackluster performance his 15 minutes of fame are over and we go on to concentrate on someone like Joey Cheek who seems to have it all together.
Woody
Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I was wondering how to email the athletes. Seems like the curling team keeps getting emails for congrats and would love to send one myself..(Sounds a bit geeky, I know. But I got hooked on them)Plus they have been getting marriage proposals. Would love to try to get mine in.... biggrin.gif

Canada's Official Sports
It most likely does not come to a surprise to anyone that one of Canada's official sports is hockey. Canada reasserted itself as the world's greatest hockey nation at the Salt Lake City 2002 Winter Olympic Games where both the women and men's hockey teams won the gold medal.

What may be a lesser known fact about Canada is that we have another official sport, lacrosse. Lacrosse had been the unofficial sport of Canada since before Confederation, although popularity has lessened somewhat since then. How did it come to be an official sport, the? In 1964, a bill was introduced to declare hockey as Canada's national sport. An opposing bill countered that though, legally, lacrosse had not been Canada's official game, popular opinion had made it so. Thus, the bill sought official recognition of lacrosse in this manner. Ultimately, neither bills were debated by Parliament. The issue arose again in Canada's Centennial Year when Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson proposed separate national summer and winter sports. This matter, however, would not be resolved for 27 years.

In 1994, Bill C-212 was introduced to officially declare hockey as Canada's national sport. Opposition came from supporters of lacrosse who wanted to recognize the traditional and cultural significance of this sport. Consequently, Bill C-212 was amended to recognize both sports. Thus, on May 12, 1994, Canada's National Sport Act (Bill C-212) became law, reading: \"To recognize hockey as Canada's National Winter Sport and lacrosse as Canada's National Summer Sport\". While hockey's popularity is unquestionable - especially in Canada, lacrosse is still enjoyed by Canadians and has gained popularity in the United States, England, Ireland, and Scotland.

Don't tell Canadians that we don't need 3 hours of Curling coverage....the province of Newfoundland cancelled school this afternoon so EVERYONE can watch Brad Gushue (Newfoundlander) go for Gold in the Men's Curling Final. Should he win the Gold, it'll be one of the biggest stories in Canada that's how big Curling is.

Even shopping malls have all their TVs to the game, and most work places will have it on.

One thing i'm loving about Olympic Coverage...CBC is doing a GREAT job with most events LIVE...TSN is also adding in some events...Wednesday they aired two hockey games beginning to end. It's great!
Enigma
You know you guys probably think I'm some sort of Curling fanatic, when really I'm not that big a fan. I enjoy watching The Brier and Olympics and World Championships that's about it. And for some odd reason, men's curling is the only one that appeals to me...although I've seen some AMAZING female games.

With that being said I just want to point something about how you guys said "Finland Quit". You have to remember that Finland scored one in the eighth end which put it 10-4 with two ends to go...but that leaves Gushue with hammer which means any rock that Uuseppavelneimi throws, Gushue would knock it right out...Gushue would then blank the end and do the same in the 10th...so instead of wasting everyone's time for something that will not change, you end it early. I hope that made sense.
Jim at Outsports
I did make Gushue our hot jock for tomorrow, and Jim Allen rips me in tomorrow's notebook for my snide little dig at 3 hours of curling, all made in good fun so don't attack me with those stones! biggrin.gif

Jim, that photo of Brad on the home page doesn't do him justice. He looks kinda creepy there. As a powerful, influential member of the media, can't you just get him to send you a personal pic--shirtless would be nice. biggrin.gif

Have thoroughly enjoyed the running log the last 2 weeks and didn't want the Olympics to end before saying so! I totally understand Olympics fatigue -- and this is from someone who's been to 3 and worked at one. I don't know how your columnists have made it through watching every night and more during the odd hours of the day it's on in the U.S.

The gala night of skating has been going on for many Olympics now. I agree with Ryan it seems a little pointless sometimes but it sells tickets, gives the skaters a chance in the spotlight without as much pressure (and goodness knows people who go into skating love the spotlight by definition), and it seems to be popular to watch, so it's not going away.

Really, everyone's comments have been great but let me single out Patricia -- and I hope she and her Canadian girlfriend had a fun time dishing.

For hot jock olympian I submit Italian alpline skier Giorgio Rocca

Thank God it's coming to an end! I can finally get my regular TV shows back.

And to think February is usually one of the three sweeps months, with no reruns. Damned Olympics changed that all around. tongue.gif

Hey Jim and Cyd, if you guys ever do a Hot Female Jocks of Torino, don't forget Irene Wust! Boy did my les-dar go off seeing her with her coach after she won -- and she's cute, too. She won so early on it seems everyone has forgotten about her.

I really liked the closing ceremonies. Very much a tribute to Carnivale. Love the fireworks displays. Performances by Avril Lavigne, Andrea Bocelli and Ricky Martin. Was moved to see the quadrapalegic Mayor of Vancouver accept the Olympic flag in his wheelchair (has was injured in a skiing accident at age 19). The joint was a jumpin. And of course when you have 2500 super fit athletes and the Italian male population...plenty of eye candy. Wish I had been there. Was surprised NBC did not broadcast it live this afternoon but guess I shouldn't have been.

Tell me they didn't just have the entire stadium do YMCA! All that late 70's disco in the opening ceremony was enough of a fun shock!

(And yes, it's 9 p.m. here, when we're finally seeing it on NBC.)

Does that mean I shouldn't turn on my west coast channel to watch it again, NS? tongue.gif

I can't believe I liked Ricky Martin's performance (well, some of it). I am SO gay! ohmy.gif

I enjoyed that as well as all the coverage the site did on the Olympics. It was very well done. No one around me showed much interest in the Olympics, so this was a great place to visit over the past couple of weeks. Thanks for all the hard work.

While their may be no out gay athletes at the game, I don't think there is any questions about the creative directors of the ceremonies.

Congratulations to everyone involved with Outsports.com on their unique coverage of the Winter Olympics. It's refreshing to get a different perspective on the games instead of the typical "results" type articles.

Now in keeping with my tradition of saying what else I would add to your lists/columns (ha ha) I'll leave you with one thing...

The best moment from the Winter Olympics was when a Norweigian coach handed a ski pole to Sarah Renner (Cdn Cross Country Skiier) to help her finish the race which she then went on to medal. That my friends, is the TRUE spirit of the Olympics.
Jim at Outsports
Thanks Enigma and thanks also for the great XC note, which I will add. smile.gif
