According to the film, TO WONG FOO, THANKS FOR EVERYTHING! JULIE NEWMAR, only men have Adam's apples.

From Warren article:
"They were big muscular plain women, complete with Adam's apples."

How is that possible? Were the women treated with testosterone, and therefrom developed Adam's apples?

I've Yahoo!-ed, but now I might have to learn to Yodel!!

Read the response Ms. Warren sent me:

{But what is a "man"? There are all the chromosomal shadings that result in different types of phenotypes. The mystery about the Press sisters' gender, or their chromosomal makeup, or whatever the influence was, has never been solved. I can only go by the descriptions of the time that were given.

Patricia Nell Warren}

This will take a little research...w/an open mind.

First Ms. Nell Warren's article is great and I was glad to see someone taking on this issue.

I wanted to mention Stella Walsh from the 30's & 40's.

Agreed. We're fortunate to have her articles featured here from time to time.

An autopsy surprised everyone by showing that Walsh had male genitals and both male and female chromosomes -- a condition known as mosaicism.

Male genitals?

Where (It was established that they had examined her previously...)?

"Mosaic" when used in medicine: an individual who has some cells with an abnormal or unusual genetic or chromosomal makeup while the rest of the cells in the body have the typical genetic or chromosomal constitution."

site on \"chromosomal mosaicism\"

OK, so (somebody!): The "idea" of "male" and "female", outside of what we call "transgenderism", has been in question for, say, over 100 years?

And, more importantly, these individuals have been competing (and winning) in sports events (not to mention all areas of life) for almost that long?!?!?!?

I guess it's somewhat like people who (can be looked upon as "freaks" because they) have humongous body parts.

One never knows how a human will be born.

Sorry, I didn't much like the article. Maybe I'm a dumb hick living in the ridiculously ignorant America that she described with so much condesecension, but I do think it's relevant to ask if a woman is a really a woman when she is competing in an event for women.

From the article:

QUOTE
The Notorious Sister Act

Enter Tamara Natanovna Press and her sister Irina Natanovna.

They were Ukrainian Jews born in Kharkov, a region famed for its rolling prairies rich in wheat and sugar beets.  They and their family were among the few Jews left alive in the Ukrainian SSR after World War II atrocities by the Nazis.  In 1960 the two young women arrived in Rome with 608 other females for the summer games.
....

The two “monstrosities” swept the entire division.
....

Right away the grumbling and rumors went to orange-alert level.  Not only were the Press sisters trained by millions of Soviet rubles, but no \"normal\" women could perform like they did.  They must be using some kind of unfair advantage.  There was buzz about drug use.  Though the IOC had not yet outlawed doping, some athletes on both sides were already pumping their performance with amphetamines, anabolic steroids, etc.  Indeed, many in sports were OK with men bulking up on steroids -- they looked no different than the popular over-muscled comic-book heroes of the day, like Superman, Captain Marvel, the Hulk.
....
But according to http://www.incrediblehulk.com/comichistory.html , the Hulk would not appear until 1962:

QUOTE
Hulk Comic Book History

Of all the Marvel characters, the Hulk has had possibly one of the most interesting.

1962: Stan Lee and Jack Kirby create \"The Incredible Hulk\" comic book. The rest is comic book history. The book lasted 6 issues and had the first appearance of the Grey Hulk.
....
Ladies and gentlemen, what are they teaching in our schools these days?

The Hulk was probably on Patricia Nell Warren's mind due to the heavy promotion for the film. If she were writing that paragraph right now, of course, it would be a different story now that the film has died a quick death. biggrin.gif
