And you all thought Lebron James was young....

On Saturday, at RFK Stadium in Washington DC, the Metrostars used a loophole in the goalkeeper substitution rule to bring on 16 year old Eddie Gaven at the start of overtime. Gaven ended up nearly drawing a penalty kick 6 minutes later, and then scored the game-winning goal with just 30 seconds left in overtime.

Not being familiar with the league or the players or the substitution rules, what's the loophole that allowed him into the game?

I want to know how a sub goalkeeper ended up in a position to score during a substition.

QUOTE
Having come on in a switch of goalkeepers, Gaven coming in at the beginning of extra-time for Mark Lisi after he had moved between the posts and Tim Howard into the field during the changeover, the move paid tremendous dividends for Bradley. He ran onto to a ball from Amado Guevara in the inside-left channel and held off Nelsen before hooking a shot past Rimando inside the far corner.
Did you see the game metro?

Yes I did sportinlife.....

The substitution rules state that three subs may be made in a game, plus a goalkeeper sub. The Metrostars had used up all three of their normal subs, so in order to bring Gaven onto the field they:
1. Moved goalkeeper Tim Howard onto the field.
2. Moved midfielder Mark Lisi into the goal.
3. Tell Gaven to put on a goalkeeper jersey.
4. Sub Gaven for Lisi (goalkeeper sub).
5. Gaven plays in goal until ball is played out of bounds.
6. Gaven moves onto the field, switching positions with Tim Howard.
7. Howard stops three clear chances for DC to score before Gaven scores the goal to win the game.

A little complex but it paid off....

Thanks metro. All I need now is the video. smile.gif

Sounds like the coach was on his toes. It's surprising that Gaven could just switch positions like that. Guess it's sort of like the running back throwing a pass in football.

Thought things were simpler when I played "oh so many" decades ago. Checked out USA defeating Paraguay over the weekend. Just watching Beasley sprint the sidelines is exhausting. That guys amazing. He's improving his footwork too.

Thanks for the explanation, metro. Interesting maneuvering, and it worked. Of course, if DC got a scoring chance against the 16-year-old it might be a different story.

Yeah US vs. Paraguay was pretty good...I went down to Columbus for it...I think I might have been on TV but I was stupid and forgot to tape the game....

My mom was absolutely stunned that there were players out there who were younger than 22....Beasley, Landon Donovan, Bobby Convey.....

It's always nice to see Clint Mathis in person.....

Bobby Convey is definitely a hottie himself....and in all the interviews I've seen and heard with Bobby on the local DC television and radio stations he seems like a genuinely nice, sweet guy with a good head on his shoulders -- he's the main reason I root for the DC United, even though I don't watch em as much as a lot of folks around here do....unfortunately, the team isn't nearly as dominant as they used to be, either, before Bruce Arena left for "greener pastures".

WHOA!!! I didn't know that other people thought Bobby Convey was hot...

This is kinda funny...the topic started off as being about a 16 year old scoring a goal and now we are talking about how hot Bobby Convey is...
