US opens June 5 against Portugal in group D in competition for the Soccer World Cup in South Korea/Japan.

Leading Portugal will be major hairy stud Luis Figo.

This guy has a chest you could make a bed in. Scroll down at this site to see one of the most beautiful hairy guys on the planet.

I'll be supporting our guys but OOO do I feel my loyalty slipping.

21 days and counting!

Some are left out

Others are caught up or tripped up but my favorites are the ones who just look good

sportinlife, care to give us a World Cup preview? What are the big matchups? Who are the players to watch for?
DCBucky
The Washington Post is starting its coverage of the World Cup with short daily blurbs on each of the teams -- most recently Colombia, Slovenia, Spain ...

The England can breathe easier -- The Queen just gave her approval to the W.C. roster. -- QEII, not Quentin Crisp!

As to matchups its hard to say. I think the USA has a disadvantage being grouped with one of the sponsors, North Korea who they play in their second match on June 10.

England with
David Beckham back will be a team to watch - two good looking young players in Joe Cole (20) and Michael Owen (22).

As for eye candy hopefully saucy Thierry Henry of France will be playing. Love it when scores and makes that big O with his mouth.
Raul Gonalez does a nice one too. He was one of three up for the World Player of the year 2001 along with Beckham and Figo. If looks counted Raul should have won going away (in rear).

That's my short list but it will change daily. Guess I'm a bit of a fickle slut.

Nice win today over Uruguay, a team know for its hatchet type of play. Their goalie was damn hot!

Here's my fave from Britain's team: Trevor Sinclair. Yummm!

I like Thierry Henry too. France also has David Trezeguet, Lilian Thuram, Marcel Desailly, Fabien Barthez, and lots of other hot players.

And then there's Brazil, Cameroon, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Italy, Nigeria, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, and Spain. AN INTERNATIONAL BEAUTY FEST!!!
sportinlife
From the euro2000 competition, France over Denmark, comes a nice shot of those french celebrating again:

Apparently previous World Cup hero Zenidine Zidane (in the middle) is very versatile . I like the position of his left leg.

Oh yea, and that's Laurent on the 'bottom' and Thierry on 'top'.

Love her outfit wurm. Looks like the next thing in NBA "shorts".

Check out this cover shot of USA firebrand Clint Mathis:IPB Image.

If coach Bruce Arenas can just get him over his occassional bouts with "Allenosis Iversonititis" so that he shows up regularly for practice, he could supply a jolt o take USA out of their group and beyond.

Because of his southern draw and corny sense of humor his teammates call him Cletus. Got a soft spot for draws.

Cute Nigerian captain Sunday Oliseh, number 15 making the ever-lovely GOOOOOAL with his kissable mouth, may not be playing any day after protesting nonpayment for airfare for a previous game.

He could be on my team.

My favorites are the Danes -- go Red and White! here's Martin Jørgensen -- who's next to the very cute Michael Laudrup, who, sob, isn't playing for the national team. But they also have veterans Jan Heintze, Ebbe Sand and Jesper Groenkjær, Stig Tøfting -- I think they'll do well.

Oh, and can't forget the hot stud, Peter Madsen!

YEEEEESSSS!

YO AMERICA WAKE UP! WE GOT A TEAM HERE!

I know, I know, Jamaica didn't even make the World Cup and we're lucky 13 on the planet in football, but these guys deserve some respect. FIVE GOALS to none!

Even though three player suffered unspecified injuries (Mathis' psossibly the most damaging to the team) they showed a lot of spirit just when they needed it against a perenially tough Jamaican squad.

Youth prevails with good play from Donavan and Beasley. Regardless of how far we go in THE CUP rising from dead last in the rankings in 1990 to the current level of play deserves more than three paragraphs in a rare front page soccer commentary in the NYTimes sports page (see George Vecsey's column.)

On to Foxboro to face a cute Dutch crew. I'm trying to stay faithful but it's SOOO hard!

edit: USA-jamaica was a shut out, not 5-1! They even play defense!

I can't wait! ... but ... I doubt that the WC is going to generate much interest in the U.S. -- mainly because of the times the initial matches will be shown live. Only diehard soccer fans are going to wake up at 5 a.m. -- much less at 2:30 a.m.! All the US matches will be shown on tape delay later in the day -- but these are during the day -- all school days too. (Didn't NBC suffer from poor ratings during the Seoul Olympics?)

6/5 US v Portugal 4:55 a.m. ET ESPN2
tape delay shown at 3:00 p.m.
6/10 US v Korea 2:25 a.m. ET ESPN2
tape delay shown at 4:00 p.m.
6/14 US v Poland 7:25 a.m. ET ESPN2
tape delay shown at 3:00 p.m.

What happens when you gag on those Dutch gutturals:

AAAUUUUGGGG!

Gotta love 'em!

I've never watched Survivor but this looks interesting, from today's USA Today:

"Campaign for Survivor: U.S. Soccer has unleashed a full blitz to heighten awareness of an online World Cup journal scheduled to made[sic] its debut early next month at USSoccer.com. It will be authored by Ethan Zohn, described as a "former professional soccer player but best known as the million-dollar winner of the television reality series Survivor: Africa. He will chat live with fans at 1 p.m. ET Friday at the site."

Edited for 'sic' disclaimer.

Far and away my favorite Beckham shot. Now I can turn in for the night with a contented on my face.

Thank you MSUB.

Great game. Scrappy play by both sides but USA is down 0-1 at the half! They need our psychic support - All together, assume the lotus position now let's concentrate:

HHHUUUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!

USA 0:Holland 2
Okay, who didn't hum?

Claudio Reyna is one classy player and the best dribbler on the USA team.

In the game against the Netherlands he seemed to be the only player who never lost his composure or confidence.

The Dutch had at least three players who could handle the ball and keep it in the opponents side of the field so scoring was only a matter of patiently waiting for the opportunities that came - these guys were smart.

USA has come along way but we were out-classed in this game. Got work to do and not much time. Nine days to the Tournament and fourteen until we face Portugal. Then the real fun starts.
sportinlife
Did someone mention mullets?

Alexi oh la Lalas is better without it in my book.

The big defender thinks USA should concentrate more on defense. I say they need to dribble. Three games of zip to zilch aint gonna get'em outta group D.
sportinlife
Well folks this is it. With 6 days to d-day here's the final accounting:

The official player list for the USA World Cup Team 2002

Number,Position and Name

1 GK FRIEDEL Brad
2 DF HEJDUK Frankie
3 DF BERHALTER Gregg
4 DF MASTROENI Pablo
5 MF O BRIEN John
6 DF REGIS David
7 MF LEWIS Eddie
8 MF STEWART Earnie
9 FW MOORE Joe-Max
10 MF REYNA Claudio
11 FW MATHIS Clint
12 DF AGOOS Jeff
13 MF JONES Cobi
14 DF CHERUNDOLO Steve
15 FW WOLFF Josh
16 DF LLAMOSA Carlos
17 MF BEASLEY DaMarcus
18 GK KELLER Kasey
19 GK MEOLA Tony
20 FW MC BRIDE Brian
21 MF DONOVAN Landon
22 DF SANNEH Anthony
23 DF POPE Eddie

PS Does that SI curse apply to teams or individuals? Mathis is already having some injury problems - real or imagined I don't know - but the team is looking pretty good. I just wish they had more finesse along with brute power.

WHOOOAAA! Run, don't walk, to the nearest newstand to check out the May 26 2002 edition of the New York Times Magazine spread on the USA soccer team!

Seven pages of super cool shots of seven of the players on the World Cup team in "fifth avenue haute couture," and one of Clint Mathis shirtless and looking hotter than louisiana gumbo.

Kasey Keller gets a centerfold spread that will break your heart (with a very prominent wedding ring ). Those bedroom eyes!

Unfortunately Brian McBride's best ass(et) is partially chopped off but it's easy to see that DeMarcus Beasley (a chocoholics delight ) and Landon Donavan (also wearing a band ) both have sexy mouths.

This will be the first issue that I actually keep...and have framed.

From the same issue of the above-mentioned NYT mag Clint Mathis

[quote]offers a prayer before each meal, and he has given the extra room in his town house to friends, including a backup goalkeeper and a fashion designer, in need of indefinite stays. But he also goes to Manhattan clubs with Ethan Zohn, a former pro soccer player and the winner of "Suvivor:Africa." ("Right now unfortunately," Zohn says, "more people recognize me because I'm the soccer guy from 'Survivor,' but I'm sure that'll change with the World Cup.")

Right you are Mr. Zohn.

Looks like Clint Mathis has come a long way from being the Georgia boy who, by his own half-joking admission, needs a "Redneck-to-English translator."

Also, kudos to 'Cletus' for being the only 'soccer boy' with the moxie to pose shirtless for the story.

These guys may not have the buff torsos to match athletes who need to use their upper bodies in competition but I prefer his lean, clean and realistic look to 90% of the too-buffed or bulky players in the major sports.

Wonder if he has any more 'extra rooms' in that townhouse.
