Go Matadors!

At 7 PM(U of NM time, 6 PM PST) the Big West Champs - Cal State Northrige will take on U of New Mexico. CSUN had a first round bye and played the winner of the US Santa Barbara and San Diego State game back on 11/19 which was UCSB(last year's NCAA finalist against the the Hoosiers). Indiana and UCSB is out of the tournament because CSUN defeated UCSB in another highly tense and physical match on 11/22.

Too bad the two Big West teams had to face each other in the second round but it was good game to watch for CSUN to defeat their main rival at home in the afternoon(it was 83 degrees that day) because UCSB plays better at night. It was a sold out game, great atmosphere, lots of students and alumins from both schools and for guys(and gals) who don't really care about the game and more into cruising the guys/gals at the game - there were lotsa eye candy in and out of the stadium. Anyway I hope the Matadors will defeat the Lobos - they can do it.

The only west coast teams are CSUN and Cal. I didn't expect last year's winner(Indiana) and the number 5 seed, UCLA to be upset.

Anyone following this year's College Cup?

Good luck CSUN.

Absolutely. I'm rooting for Akron for two reasons. Number one, one kid on their team graduated from my high school! He had two assists in their match against West Virginia. Also, another player graduated from the public high school in my city; his younger brother is a senior there this year. GO ZIPS!

I'm also following the women's tournament too- the quarterfinals were last night. Penn State defeated Santa Clara, Portland beat defending national champs Notre Dame, and UCLA beat Virginia 5-0! In the other match, UNC vs. Florida State, the game went into penalty kicks. In the second round, US national team forward Heather O'Reilly had her penalty saved. Florida State took advantage and nailed all 5 of theirs for a 5-4 upset win.

NCAA Tournament updates-

On the women's side, Portland wins the 2005 National Title in today's final, beating UCLA 4-0. The 4 goals were the only four allowed in the last 5 NCAA tournament games for UCLA.

In the men's tournament, the semifinalists are set. After defeating UConn on penalties, the Univ. of Akron fell on PKs to Maryland. Clemson scored a 1-0 over Creighton to head to the College Cup. SMU's "golden goal" in the second OT period gave them a 3-2 over UNC. New Mexico made it to the College Cup as well, with senior Jeff Rowland scoring a golden goal against California.

The 2005 Men's College Cup will be played next Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Matches will be televised on ESPN2 and ESPNU.

The Maryland Terrapins win the title. Congrats on a hard fought game against the New Mexico Lobos.
