If only I were back home today instead of in Baltimore. I could have stayed home to watch the matchup of rookie phenoms: the Cubs' Mark Prior against the Phillies' Brett Myers in his major league debut.
And Myers wins, allowing just 2 hits in 8 innings!Article on young pitchers in the majors

Let's just hope they aren't ruined at a tender age by some nitwit manager leaving them in for 130+ pitches in a meaningless game. (Prior is safer now that Don Baylor is gone.)

That's more likely to happen in AL games due to the DH. Brett Myers threw just 90 pitches yesterday and was still taken out after the 8th.

An item on Yahoo Sports (from the Sporting News):
[quote] The date: June 24. The place: Moosic, Pa. The Columbus Clippers are down, 16-0, to Brett Myers and the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons. The fun is about to begin. .
In the top of the fifth, the Clips' Bob Scanlan hits a Scranton batter with a pitch. Myers responds in the top of the sixth, sending a Columbus batter sprawling courtesy of a fastball aimed behind the head. In the bottom of the sixth, a Scanlan pitch hits uberprospect Marlon Byrd, Scranton's center fielder, in the shoulder.
The opposing benches exchange words between innings. Yankees uberprospect Drew Henson (who's 6-foot-5 and built like a brick buffalo-dumpling house) has a nice chat with Myers. Myers' response? He tells Henson to not bother digging in next time at-bat (according to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the actual words: "You're next, buddy! You're next!"). Henson is the third batter in the seventh inning. The first pitch goes behind Henson's head. He charges the mound.
After a bench-clearing brawl in which Myers sustains a bloody nose (he was accidentally hit by teammate Johnny Estrada at the bottom of a scrum), Myers says he has one regret: That he didn't put up his fists. Said Myers: "If I would have hit him with one of my hands, we'd be in a hospital. I'd be there getting a cast on my hand, and he'd be in there for his broken face."
Myers, as a youth, was an amateur boxer. Heh heh.
