Anyone else like watching English league footie? I'm a huge Everton fan, though, alas, it's going to be a long season again--maybe even [PERISH THE THOUGHT] the drop.

Any other footie lovers out there?

Oh, and Nigel Martyn of Leeds is my new boyfriend.
Uclaute
Yes. There are a few others crazy English footie fans. I watch as much as I can. Newcastle United fan here. Just loved watching them beat Man U....great game.
We got the red scum this weekend, so I think you can cheer us this week.

Hello
im a big soccer guy, love to watch the games and im a Man U fan, love watching all the matches though and you will see some of the hottest guys in the world no doubt.

Wow, what a weekend in England: Man U., down 3-nil to Spurs at the break, score 5 in the second half; Leeds United keep their top of the table position by eeking out a road win at Ipswich; The Red Scum, er, Liverpool win 0-2 at Newcastle; and the Blue (Good) Side of Liverpool triumph 5-0 over a hapless West Ham.

I love Leeds United (not as much as Everton, but as a 'second team'). They have one of my favorite lust objects in Nigel Martyn and some other hot players like Alan Smith, Harry Kewell, Ian Harte, Gary Kelley etc. I really think that if they stay healthy and don't get distracted by the UEFA Cup, they can win the Premiership.
Jim Allen
Well, Everton got a much needed win to put a little space between them and the drop zone. Changing managers at the end of the season might be seen as a panic move, but something needed to be done.

The Arse can beat their chests all they want about being title favorites, but I think it's still United's to lose. Some important European games coming up for both teams.

This is an excellent season for both the title and the relegation teams; it'll probably go down to the final day for both races. I just hope that Everton's streak of 49 straight years in the top flight stays intact. It'll be nail-biting time unless they can string a couple of wins together.

Newcastle United 6, Everton 2. Need I say anything else Mr. Allen?

Did any of you guys catch the goals scored by Man United over Chelsea?! Absolutely beautiful! -Poetry in motion...

It's going to be a great finish to the season, and I can even see Liverpool sneaking by both Arsenal and Man U if both teams aren't careful!

I watched the Arsenal vs Ipswich match today, and was hoping that Ipswich could come away with a draw, but alas, they were simply outclassed in the second half. (Final score was 2-0, for Arsenal)

Although I am a Man U fan, I love watching beautiful football and Arsenal sure seems to make the bottom-tier teams seem like amateurs...

As I said, it's gonna be a great finish in the Premiership!

I thought I'd bump this thread up in the hope that during the loooonnnnggg English footie season, we can talk about about the Premiereship and Why Liverpool FC Is The Source Of Evil In The World Today.

*Cough* OK, Liverpool isn't The Source etc.; in fact, based on the game I saw yesterday on TV, they are (it kills me to say this) looking poised to get their first title since 1990. They have virtually a World Cup squad out there and as the picture in another thread proves, a real hottie in John Arne "I Have 5% Body Fat" Riise; Owen needs to shave though. The defense looks solid and if Owen, Heskey and the other strikers they've gotten in the close season perform, they could be really tough.

My boys Everton scratched back for a 2-2 draw with Spurs. Kind of worrying that their new keeper Richard Wright ("The future England #1" or so the hype says) made hash out of the 2 Spurs goals. I'll take the point though. I'll settle for mid-table mediocrity this year; another relegation battle would be soooo despressing.

Arsenal looks really good; Manchester United look like they might struggle--they won't have to worry about the distraction of European football if they don't win the 2nd leg of their upcoming Champions League match.

The Leeds v. Man City match was on TV on Saturday. I'm bitterly disappointed that my Lust Object Nigel Martyn is now the #2 choice as Leeds keeper; Paul Robinson IS good though. Leeds played good attacking football but City is a typical Keegan team: push forward and don't bother with such trivial things as man marking or playing coherent defense. City could easily be playing in the Nationwide League again next year.

It's great to have football back and I'm really happy that my cable system FINALLY got Fox Sports World; my Spanish is almost non-existent and so I'd watch the games on Fox Sports Espanol and turn the sound down. I love English announcers (esp. Martin Tyler).

Rumour is Nigel Martyn is for sale. But with the new transfer window system they have to sell him before 31 Aug.

NEWCASTLE UNITED 4, West Ham 0
Great way to start the season, but it only gets tougher very early on for Newcastle...if they can get through the first half of the season they could make a run for a top spot...
Jim Allen
Yeah, the Prison Stripes looked very impressive. Too be fair, West Ham had nothing going offensively--I'll never understand the "Lone Striker" formation, unless the LS is Ronaldo--but Newcastle really took the game to them. It'll be interesting to see if Newcastle's European adventures will detract from the domestic agenda. I'm sure most of the (Car)Toon Army would gladly trade some wins against teams like Grasshoppers Zurich for more Premiership points--they last won the title, when? When our grandparents were kids?

Weee! The English footie season is in full swing.
Jim Allen
Woohoo! Sunderland 0-Everton 1!! Everton is tied for 2nd! Bring on Real Madrid and Bayern Munich!

*Cough* So, it's only two games but it's nice to see the Toffee's get points from games they easily would have thrown away early last year.

I watched Liverpool dismantle a plucky, but waaay overmatched, Southampton this morning. The Red Shite look really, really good; rock solid defense, a dominating midfield, and plent of options up front. As long as the RS don't win the league, I'll be happy.

So much for the Prison Stripes, a 1-0 loser to Man City; Arsenal pulled one out at the last mo' too. Excellent match on Fox Sports World yesterday: a thrilling 2-2 draw between Chelsea and Man U; a great goal by the ridiculous looking Beckham and a great equalizer by Giggs. Lots of matches on TV this week.
AlexUK
What a goal that was by David Beckham against Chelsea ! and with his left foot !
Jim Allen
On the other hand, Michael "The Boy Wonder" Owen, while still gorgeous, will be kicking himself this AM. I watched the incredible Red Scum v. Prison Stripes match yesterday, and Owen should have easily scored a hat trick, as opposed to his one from the spot. And Emile Hesky! Great playing behind Owen as a holding striker, but worthless in front of goal; two shots he should have buried. The cute German, Dieter Hamman, scored a great goal for the Scum and Newcastle never gave up. Great game.

Not much to say about Everton not being able to put away a 10-man Man City. Still work to be done. Roy Keane is a pyscho and while his Man U. teammates are making all the right noises about supporting him, I can't imagine that they'll be happy about his latest bit of madness. Get thee to a pyschologist, Roy. And I'm tired of Arsene Wegner mysteriously looking a his nails whenever one of his players gets carded and claiming "I had my view of the play blocked". Viera's second yellow was totally justified; in and of itself, it was a red card. I hope to be able to go to Highbury in December, if I can buy a sclaped ticket.

No Premiereship this weekend, it's an England friendly against Portugal at Villa Park. The muggers of Asian students, Lee Bowyer and Jonathan Woodgate, are in the team and luckily, the aging and possibly past it, David Seaman isn't. England has some good young players in the squad now and it'll be interesting to see them progress through Euro 2004.
AlexUK
Arsene Venger said that after he talked to Viera and got his side of the story he was going to "vigourously defend him at the appeal" or words to that effect.

Nice to see that Arsene was keeping an open mind about the incident
Jim Allen
Well, now Viera is claiming he's burned-out and needs a break. After only 5 games. He's claiming that playing for France in the WC did him in. Uh, Patrick? France got eliminated in the group stage. Wenger isn't buying it either.

I watched the Prison Stripes v. Leeds match from Wednesday on tape last night. Excellent match--Newcastle has to feel hard done by with the first goal as Viduka was clearly off side but really, they need to wonder how they can dominate possession and shots and corners and still not score. I like Leeds despite the fact that one of my major lust objects, the keeper Nigel Martyn, is on the bench.

Man U is in trouble. So is Everton; a bitter 1-0 loss to Southampton on a penalty.

Should be some good matches this weekend. On TV (Fox Sports World): On Saturday, Bolton Wanderers v. The Red Scum from the Reebook (starts at 9:00 am PST and is replayed at 8:00 pm PST); Sunday at 11:00 am PST is Man City--the team for which defending is just a theory--versus Blackburn Rovers and on Monday at noon PST is new boys Birmingham City v. Aston Villa. But the big one is Wednesday at 5:00 pm PST: the grudge match between Leeds United and their hated rivals from across the Pennines, Man U. Should be a cracker and I'll definitely watch it.
