What a series & what a game. Watching that games just makes me angry that the M's are not inthe playoffs. I really had the BosSox written off after losing the first two games. It's simply amazing that they came back to tie the series against the A's pitching staff. Whoddathunkit? Are the A's going the route of the Braves? Make the playoffs only to face an early exit?
I'm with others on the board. I'll root for either team as long as they beat the Yankees.

I'm going to be in Boston for Games 3 & 4 at Fenway. Obviously, the scalpers with be getting prices that will require a 2nd mortgage so there'll be no chance of being inside Fenway, but can anyone recommend a bar (gay, hopefully) that's fun to watch a game with a crowd of Sox fans in? I'm staying in The Fenway, as it happens, so near there would be great. Thanks.

I believe the closest gay bar to the Fens is the Ramrod on 1254 Boylston Street. I *think* there are TV's, but I'm not sure. I've never watched a game there so I don't even know if they would be showing it.
edited to add:
Even I thought showing Jillian's was weird. I turned to my hubby and asked, "They're showing this to the entire country? Why?"

The Ramrod is on the Boylston St. side of Fenway in the block to the left of the McDonald's. I haven't been there in many years, but assume they still have a few TV's- no idea on the crowd.

Umm, you probably don't want to be TOO near Fenway, especially after a Red Sox win. It was fan riot time in
the neighborhood last night. I'm a couple of blocks from
Lansdowne St, but I could hear them partying 'til all hours.
As to gay bars, the Ramrod is within spitting distance of the ballpark, if you dig the leather-and-bears scene. Fritz, in the South End, is the city's closest approximation to a gay sports bar. They have multiple screens, and perhaps a more knowledgeable crowd. None of the bars will lack for enthusiasm, though. Boston this weekend is going to be
electric!

Ha! The first time I saw them cut there, they didn't realize they were on screen. They noticed and went nuts, this one cute Asian getting
very friendly with the bear-ish guy in front of him.
Fritz sounds like it could be the place to go. Thanks for the info!

Boston pitching is pretty banged up... They do have an incredible offense, though... New York has been here so many times, and the starting pitchers just need to do what they did against Minnesota. If the Yankees don't start out jumpy and be patient at the plate, all should go well for them. New York in 6! GO YANKS!

I don't know how much agree with that article. Although I will say the writer should have used the Atlanta Braves as a better example as opposed to the Yankees to support his position. These ideas seem to hold truer in the National League. But, with the exception of last year's playoffs, they don't seem to stand up in the American League. I know that "statistics don't lie", but it looks like he really had to dig deep to come up with those stats.

Once again, I find myself agreeing with you. Except, I'm going with the Yanks in 5. Even if Boston starts believing their own hype, I don't see them coming through.
It's tense, here in New England. Loyalties are divided and I know how overly aggressive BoSox fans can get in their enthusiasm. Hopefully, they'll be able to maintain some form of civility, but I doubt it.

I can't wait to get to Boston. I've already plotted out my viewing spots for the Saturday and Sunday games, but I'm going to wear my bright blue Everton shirt so that even someone who has had 27 beers doesn't mistake me for a Yankee fan.
It's really cool that the friend I'm staying with lives close to Fenway. Should be a great atmosphere, violence notwithstanding.
But what is the state of Yankee pitching? I don't really follow them, so I'm curious if Clemens has anything left? The metal biker dude Wells, he toast? Etc.

So the NY Times today has this oooey-gooey, wishy-washy editorial about how exciting it would be for the fans to have a Red Sox-Cubs world series [of the damned!].
The quote: ''With all due respect to our New York readership — Yankee fans among them — to George Steinbrenner and to the Yankees themselves, we find it hard to resist the emotional tug and symmetrical possibilities of a series between teams that seem to have been put on earth to tantalize and then crush their zealous fans.''
Not bothering to MENTION that the New York Times Co. actually owns a small stake of the Sox. Then they hedge their bets by saying the Yanks will probably win it all. Well, they do tend to.
One would think that the Times would at least root for the home team.

Loyalties are not divided in New England. Keith just doesn't realize he lives in Upper New York City. Once you get beyond CT, New England is pretty solidly Red Sox country.
I'm still debating whether to go to Boston NEXT weekend (17-19). If the Red Sox win, Games 1 and 2 would be that Saturday and Sunday. Just to be in Boston during the World Series would be incredible. I could stay at my fraternity house on the Fenway (just a 10-minute walk from Fenway Park) and celebrate down on Landsdowne St.

Like pandering politicians?

(Bos-area Bloomberg has re-election motives for declaring himself a Yankee rooter, but at least remembers going to Braves Field as a youth. Ed Koch used to leave Mets' April openers in the middle of the first, without realizing the home team hadn't batted.)
The tabloids do a nice enough job shilling for the Yanks, I think.
My unscientific sense is more NYC-dwelling baseball *fans* hate the Yankees than root for them, especially when you consider that most grew up elsewhere, and that many area natives had dads who loved the Giants or Dodgers.
Who will be the first Yankee pitcher to have a crappy, Anaheim 2002-style start?

As thrilling as the ALDS was for the Sox, and much as I am a hahdcore fan, I predict a Yankees victory in 6 games. Pedro will win, someone else will get lucky, and we'll be throughly dominated. Sigh. #27 for the Bombers.
On my way to the Shania concert at the FleetCenter last night, a Yankee capped scalper was giving some girls grief for wearing cowboy hats. One of them gave it right back and called him on wearing a Yankees cap in Boston (at the FleetCenter, no less!). His thoughtful response was to call the girls douchebags.

Almost a missed call on the Todd Walker home run. Not sure where Angel Hernandez was looking in calling the ball foul. It either hit the foul pole or the hand of a fan in front of the foul pole and dropped straight down.

I enjoyed the game last night. Again Fox came through with a clear, or almost clear, replay showing the ball hitting the foul pole or a "fan" glove in front of the foul pole. I wonder how the right field umpire missed the call so badly, when he was the closest.
I also enjoyed the slow motion shots of the Red Sox pitcher throwing that nasty knuckle ball. The ball never spun, you could see the writing on the ball the entire way to the plate.
I still don't know how the Sox have a chance, the Yanks have an all-star lineup and pitching staff. I pray that the Sox will win, but I still have to go with my original pick, the Yankees in 6 games. I think this game was the gods setting up the Red Sox fans for another heartbreaker.

Unbelievable. But in Yankee mythology, Andy Pettitte is, right?
CAREER POSTSEASON STATS
Mussina 81.1 ip, 3.21 ERA, 4-6
Pettitte 160.1 ip, 4.35 ERA, 11-7
Both have pitched decently in postseason games -- Mussina up until last night especially -- and not all that different from their regular season performances.
"Big game pitching" as a separate skill is a myth. Those who have been consistently excellent in high-profile situations (eg, Bob Gibson in World Series) were great the rest of the time too.
If that stupid pre-game bald eagle scalps a Yankee, boo freakin' hoo. (At least he's as directionless as the nation.) Time to scrap the jingoistic self-pity, and the grotesque 6-1/2-minute 7th inning stretches too.
I'm glad the game was essentially over at 4-0 ... cuz I fell asleep. I hope Fox at least ditched the Cubs laugher elsewhere.

I've always liked knuckleball pitchers, and Tim Wakefield definitely had it working last night. Hopefully more minor league players will learn the pitch, so it doesn't become extinct. Wakefield throws a faster knuckleball, than Dennis Springer(who retired last year, I think?) he would change speeds often, and sometimes even throw knucklers in the mid-40mph range(sometimes not quite making it over the plate)! Jared Fernandez(Astros) and Steve Sparks(A's) are the only other K-ball pitchers in the majors.

[/quote]BillW, I know I am walking right into this because we have discussed ERA's vs. Wins right before the All-Star Break. (Man, have I been letting you clobber me for that long? wink ) I love Moose, but Pettite's 11-7 postseason record still jumps out at me over Mussina's. I know you are going to talk to me about Mussina's clearly stronger ERA, and the run support that Pettite gets as opposed to Mussina. However, it just appears that the Yankees (and the Orioles in the past) are in a funk in the postseason when Moose is on the mound. I can appreciate the stats, but Pettite's 11 postseason victories mean quite a lot regardless of how it gets done. Now, maybe tomorrow morning I may be ready to agree with you. I hope not.
