Jurors appeared to enjoy watching the bacchanalian revelry. On the tape, a man with sculpted muscles strikes Atlas-like poses and other male models cavort in flesh-colored bikinis.

Five scantily clad women in diaphanous dresses dance around a pool, soon joined by five bare-chested male dancers. A man wearing huge butterfly-like wings appears in a puff of smoke, and an archer shoots a flaming arrow to light up a sign reading, \"Congratulations Karen and Dennis.\"

\"It's me,\" crows singer Jimmy Buffett, a secret guest flown in for the occasion for $250,000
The only good thing to come out the financial scandals of the last few years is that it's killed stone dead the pathetic CEO-worship of the late 90's.

He'll find lots of scantily clad men when he's doing a 5-10 stretch.

I don't believe a church should ever have a role in crafting legislation, but that's just me, I understand the power of the RCC in Mass.
Right on, CPT. This letter to a local editor hits that nail on the head:

Bishops stick their noses in
Boston Globe, 10/30/03

How can it be that \"the state's Catholic bishops hav[ing] signaled a willingness to discuss granting benefits to domestic partners\" could create \"'a window of opportunity' to greatly expand benefits for same-sex couples in the next year\"?

Why is it... \"politically easier now to feel free to engage in discussion, given the statement offered by the bishops\"?

I thought it was the bishops' job to run their church, in this instance determining who it will or will not marry, and the Legislature's job to run the state, in this instance determining what official recognition of domestic partnerships will be. Let's leave the church out of legislative decisions.

Heh. Isn't Phyllis Schlaffly's son gay? Talk about a hostile environment.

I was checking out a few websites about the whole Marriage "Protection" Week, and I found something interesting: In a week devoted to the "protection" of marriage, the religious right groups were focused more on preventing gay marriage and civil unions than preserving straight marriages and blocking divorce. Maybe if they'd named it "Marriage Denial Week" it'd have been a lot clearer.

The Gov. of Wisconsin has veto'd a marriage bill that would have defined marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=stor...me_sex_marriage

From the story:
By JR ROSS, Associated Press Writer

MADISON, Wis. - Gov. Jim Doyle has vetoed a bill that would define marriage in Wisconsin as solely between a man and woman, saying state law already clearly prohibits same-sex marriage and the legislation was "mean-spirited."

State law now defines marriage as a contract between a husband and wife. But supporters of the bill have warned that activist judges could interpret the language loosely and redefine marriage to allow gay couples to wed. They said the bill would ensure gay marriage would not be allowed or recognized in Wisconsin.

"This bill is just another example of the Legislature focusing its time and energy on divisive, mean-spirited bills that do nothing to grow Wisconsin's economy, make health care more affordable and accessible, or improve our public schools," Doyle, a Democrat, said Friday.

This governor got it right - and I like his calling it for what it is: "mean spirited." His taking the legislators to task for wasting time on this crap was also welcome. In all, a good move and there should be more like them expressed in the same aggressive manner!

Yes, Phyllis Schlafly's eldest son John, a lawyer, was outed back in 1992. I once saw a marvelous fictional story about the two by a professor at SIUE, I think; I should have kept it, because it was really entertaining and beautifully written.

Okay, thanks to the Independent Gay Forum (which BTW may be a forum for gays, but is hardly always "independent") there is this wonderful little quote.

QUOTE
The Sanctity of Marriage.

The following quip has popped up all over the Internet, with various attributions, and has also been published in several newspapers as a letter to the editor:

\"The actions taken by the New Hampshire Episcopalians are an affront to Christians everywhere. I am just thankful that the church's founder, Henry VIII and his wife Catherine of Aragon, his wife Anne Boleyn, his wife Jane Seymour, his wife Anne of Cleves, his wife Katherine Howard, and his wife Catherine Parr are no longer here to suffer through this assault on traditional Christian marriage.\"
That's even better than the "which marriage are you protecting?" question asked of the thrice-married Bob Barr during the DOMA debates.
CPT_Doom
Okay, this is a classic. Apparently, at the very same time our esteemed President was supporting "Marriage Protection Week" he was also congratulating the Metropolitan Community Church on its 35th anniversary.

QUOTE
In the letter dated October 14, 2003, to MCC Los Angeles, the founding congregation of Metropolitan Community Church, President Bush wrote: \"By encouraging the celebration of faith and sharing of God's love and boundless mercy, churches like yours put hope in people's hearts and a sense of purpose in their lives. This milestone provides an opportunity to reflect on your years of service and to rejoice in God's faithfulness to your congregation.\"
Clearly the White House did not realize that this is a church that not only caters to gay and lesbian sinners, but also performs same-sex marriages, and its Canadian branch was a key force in overturning Canadian marriage limitations.

Advocate Coverage

Of course, the \"pro-family\" movement has picked up on this quickly, and have demanded and explanation from the White House:

QUOTE
Today [Tony Perkins, head of the Family \"Research\" Council] spoke with the White House about this matter. While on its face this looks troubling, it appears to have been a form letter which does not reflect the previously stated views of the administration on the issue of marriage. We look forward to the White House's official response.
I can't wait to see the "compassionate" conservative spin on this one. Not to mention I find it interesting that the head of FRC can just pick up the phone and get in touch with the White House whenever he wants. I guess the links between Mr. Bush and the anti-gay right are as strong as ever.

Hey, don't forget that Henry VIII chopped off some of those wives' heads too! Talk about the sanctity of Christian marriage--*and* he was a Papist for most of his life!

And then his daughter Elizabeth, who decisively advanced Anglicanism over Roman Catholicism in Britain, couldn't bother to get married. Ever. Oh well, what can you do?

Another interesting fact I read in a Philip Hensher review of Graham Robb's new book on homosexuality in the 19th century: gay marriage was first proposed in...1905!

Finally, Voltaire's quip. He actually was curious enough to "experiment" with homosexual sex once (don't naysay if you haven't tried it), after which his partner sought another coupling, meriting this response from Voltaire: "Once a philosopher, twice a sodomite." Almost part of the team....

Tony Perkins? As in tortured closet-case/bisexual "Norman Bates"? Too bad it's not true, that'd be perfect.

I await the right wing spin on that screw-up.

I found out yesterday that my brother is getting divorced. f**king hetero's, why do they hate the family so much?
CPT_Doom
No Tony Perkins, as in former Louisiana Congressman who proposed laws around "covenant marriage," which make it harder for hetero's to divorce.

As in Tony Perkins, the Louisiana Senate Candidate who left office after receiving a whopping 10% of the primary vote in the last election.
