Thats all, now get back to work.
Marc
Actually it was yesterday. Texas Rangers won the opening game against the World Series champs.
George Twins fan
ESPN and MLB can conspire all they want and schedule games like those that were to be played in Japan or last night. But today is Opening Day.

I'm watching Twins-Tigers on ESPN. Hottie Brad Radke pitched a very strong game, at one point retiring 16 straight batters and the Twins hold a 3-1 lead. Big stud Dustan Mohr blasted a 2 run homer and Pierzyski hit a solo shot. Go Twins!!!

It's a beautiful Spring day and I'm wearing my Royals blue, in dire hopes of a good start for the team that SI proclaimed the worst in MLB. Today's game will be the only sell-out game at least until St. Louis plays here in May. Wish I was at the ballpark instead of at work right now. The Royals had a good spring (I know, that means nothing), and the local media says the team "has a lot of heart" (Is that a death knell, or what?). Oh well, this time of year there's always a glimmer of hope.

Opening day, at least for a little while... you're in first...

It's great... I am at my office listening to ballgame (not the war) on the radio. I don't even care that it is the Orioles and Indians. I got my Sports Illustrated last week with a beautiful picture of the Yankee starting rotation. After a rough winter, I hope everything turns out fine. smile.gif
Gaga4Gaby
Well, Maddux got spanked and the Atlanta Braves lost their opener 10-2 to the Expos. I was thinking that we shoulda given up Greg and kept Glavine, but he wasn't faring much better for the Mets this afternoon at last check. I think my team is getting old sad.gif Still, what fun to have baseball back and I'm sure there are many good moments to come for the Bravos!

GO BRAVES!!!!

Take me out with the crowd.
Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jack,
I don't care if I never get back,
So let's root, root, root for the MARINERS,
If they don't win it's a shame.
For it's one, two, three strikes, you're out,
At the old ball game"

Yes, it's baseball time. Finally. And I quote Molly Shannon's Helen Madden character on SNL (complete with leg kick) "I Love It! I Love It! I Love It!"

Let's Go M's. Gambatte Ichiro-san. let's kick some Angel's, A's and Ranger's booty.

Yay, Royals beat Chi White Sox 3-0 to win the home opener! Now we're tied for first with the Twins. Good pitching for the boys in blue today.

So fun listening on the radio at work today. In the background I could even hear a a certain familiar (and cute) lemonade vendor who wanders the stands calling, "LEEEEE-mo-nay LEE-mo-nay LEE-mo-nay... WHOOOoooo!" Then the surrounding crowd returns the "WHOOOoooo!"

I love it... Opening Day and I get my first Yankee slam of the year. Don't be too jealous, maybe this year your Indians will... Man, what am I saying? biggrin.gif
charliecstl
I did not get to go down in person, but did watch the Cards. In a high scoring affair, we beat the Brewers 11-9. Very exciting game with lots of offense and some fine defensive plays for day one of the season.

Amazing how much you can enjoy something so simple and nice.
Indy Mike
Even with the bad publicity baseball gets, I still enjoy it. I plan on getting to games in Cincy, St. Louis, Philly, and Chicago this year so should be a great summer.
cubsfan1982
What a beautiful day for a ballgame, even if it is raining here right now. Cubs spank Tommy Glavine and the Mets 15-2, and Patterson has a career day. I know it's early, and I know it's only one game, but I'm feeling cautiously optimistic about this season. Eamus Catuli!
David1969
It's not such a lovely day anymore! Looks like Derek Jeter might be seriously hurt. At almost the same moment as Boston's come-from-ahead loss to Tampa Bay (can't wait for the write-up in the papers tomorrow!), Toronto's Ken Huckaby drove Derek's shoulder into the dirt in a collision at 3rd. Nothing dirty on Huckaby's part, but an ugly accident with Huckaby running to cover 3rd as Derek tried to move from 1st to 3rd. Derek started screaming in agony immediately. He was carted off 15 minutes later. I'm waiting in fear to see how long Derek might be out.
phillyrunner
In the tale of two ex Brave starters, one of them got a rude welcoming. Tom Glavine, after giving up 5 runs in 4 innings was booed off the field by the Mets faithful. I hope the 35 million man doesn't let the fans get to him or it will be a long season.

Meanwhile Kevin Millwood pitched rather well giving up 2 in 6 innings. Perhaps the Phillies did get the better deal. Only time will tell wink .

It's a crazy, mixed-up world! Both Maddux and Glavine (who, if he is to get in trouble, seems to do it in the first inning) get rocked, and my Dodgers easily handle the Diamondbacks. Pity thy had to do it on the road...I'm actually looking forward to getting $.75 in change from a $10-bill when I buy a beer and double bag of peanuts!

Uh-oh! biggrin.gif Both Glavine and Maddux gave up four runs in the first inning today.

Meanwhile, that notorious slow-starter who'll have all kinds of trouble adapting to National League pitching ripped an RBI double in his first at-bat and followed it up with a walk and two singles. Long live The Anaconda! biggrin.gif

Oh...and how 'bout that 13-minute snow delay in Baltimore! eek!

Yeah, that Maddux/Glavine thing was strange. But as I see it, the Braves got their 'bad' game out of the way already. It can only get better. rolleyes.gif And my Javy looked great!! After losing 30 pounds his upper body is massive and he has a nice tight waistline. I never noticed how tall he actually is, (6'3"), he's all legs now. Unfortunately, his slump continues. With the bases loaded, he hits into a double play in the 8th inning. Doesn't keep me from drooling though. Thank God it's baseball time again!!

Wow, interesting opening day. The trifecta of Maddux, Glavine & The Big Unit all getting shelled. Jeter getting k-o'd in game 1? And The D-Rays actually winning a game in the bottom of the ninth? Is this the sign of an all out free for all season?

What? oh yeah, it's just one game. Don't Panic. Everyone stay calm. All is well...I hope.

M's open up today in Oakland. We've got some eye candy for you, children!

Grrrrrrr.

The weird thing was I saw this coming. The Red Sox couldn't score. 3 of 4 runs were UNearned. Yipes!
That and karma. Last year didn't the Red Sox come from behind with Tampa Bay with alarming frequency?!
Usually I would end up really distracted by stuff like this, but I slept well last night. Maybe I'm finally growing up and don't treat baseball like a 6 year old anymore. tongue.gif

Question: Why was this on the national news? I watched the Today Show this a.m. and they covered this between the Gulf War II and the Michigan affirmative action case before SCOTUS. Most people west of the Hudson could care less about NYC's team, folks!

Because they had graphic video of the collision and of Jeter grimacing and yelling out in pain, and you could clearly see that the shoulder was dislocated. Like when a football player dislocates a knee and his leg bends backwards, and they show it over and over. Also, although the rest of the country may not care about most of the Yankees' injuries, they do care about a Derek Jeter injury. The guy is popular and nationally well-known, for gosh sakes!

Kind of funny (in a cosmic sort of way) that Steinbrenner spends the offseason (or at least part of it) bashing Jeter, then Jeter gets knocked out in the first game. Gets knocked out busting his ass trying to get an extra base, no less. Perhaps he thought there was some wild party on third. I bet Steinbrenner will be wishing he had his distracted, unfocused party animal back.
osufan
Rumors flying in Cleveland that Yankees will want Omar to fill Jeter's position. I should say "take Omar" as Yankees just do whatever they want, right ?

Hopefully Cleve management will at least get some prospects for him.
fantomas
Cards won (YEA!) but I was very bummed by Jeter tearing his shoulder up getting smacked by Huckaby!

What a loss for the Yankees--it really does overshadow the brilliantly pitched game by Clemens (I like him even though he's a brute and a right-wing pro-Bush Republican) and Alfonso Soriano, who definitely appears to be back on track. I also am glad Ventura had a big game--a great guy, a very good contributor. If Clemens can find his groove at least through July, the Yankees have a good chance of going far. Contreras wasn't so bad either.

from DC Buckley:

Question: Why was this [Jeter's injury] on the national news?

The "Today Show" is extremely provincial in its NY-centrism. If the injured player had been from the Kansas City Royals (as an example,) there would have no coverage on "Today." It's one of the perks/pressures of playing in NY.

Despite what everyone thinks, the Yankee organization does not own NBC nor any of the other networks. Enjoy the baseball season and your favorite ball club. The Red Sox have spent millions of dollars and 85 years worrying about what the Yankees next move would be. I think it is odd that people are obsessing over media coverage of Jeter, which was a setback for the Yankees, NOT YOUR TEAM. The Yankees will always carry on whether you are jealous of them or not. Oh yeah, Giambi smacks two homers at Skydome...
Yankees 10, Blue Jays 1
Munson Man
The Yankees have a big national following, and Jeter individually is very popular. Coupled with the fact that the game was on ESPN, and therefore a large part of the country saw the collision, I think NBC felt it was newsworthy. Also, the "voyeuristic" aspect of seeing a professional athlete helpless and screaming in pain probably contributed to the clip being shown over and over nationwide.

Hey watch it -- them's fightin' words! The Brew Crew ain't Selig's team anymore. They have enuf problems without him! rolleyes.gif

The team that more accurately fits the description of Selig's team would be Les Expos (since MLB took them over) -- ironically the 3-0 Expos!
