Gov. Goodhair is letting his homophobia show, again...

QUOTE
During a news conference held in a Fort Worth church, Perry was asked what he would tell Texas gay and lesbian war veterans returning home from war about the law. Governor Perry responded, according to the Fort Worth Star Telegram, by saying that “Texans made a decision about marriage and if there's a state that has more lenient views than Texas, then maybe that’s a better place for them to live.”

Sometimes I wonder why I live in this state. Maybe we should move all the conservative Christian freaks to Texas (although most of them are already here), make the place its own country, and I'll move elsewhere.

I'm sure all the gay veterans in Texas just feel so loved and wanted right now...especially in this time of war and when the military is missing its recruiting goals by thousands.

His biography page on the gov's website says he was in the Air Force for four and a half years. Oh, yeah, he served (performed services?) in the Aggie Corps of Cadets. He was also a Yell Leader and an animal science major (is sheep husbandry a requirement for the major?). tee-hee-hee smile.gif

Perry is an idiot, even more so than Bush.
He is moving hard right with Kay BH on his ass, he is going for the knuckle dragging voters who think Kay BH is to "liberal."

Perry supports sodomy laws and recently signed anti-gay legislation at Calvary Christian Academy, in Fort Worth. He was joined by Tony Perkins (Family Research Council) and Don Wildmon (American Family Association.)

Oh, by the way, Perry was endorsed by Uncle Tom's Log Cabin in his last race for gov.
They praised him as "good for gays."
Way to go guys.

See, all of those rightwing nuts are right: "working within" works! smile.gif Aren't you guys proud of the progress that "working within" is making. Wow, with progress like this, we'll all be exterminated within the next 10 or 15 years!

Everytime I read a posting quoting one of those elected officials I cringe and have to wonder what the people who ran against them had to be like if these guys are the best available and also "what the hell were you thinking " when you voted for them. I mean, do these people live in some sort of Pleasantville bubble and don't realize the world is changing all around them. I was offered a consulting job in Texas last year and turned it down just because of people like this and not wanting to live anywhere that would consider me a second or third class citizen.

Good question, and Im particulary puzzled why gay people support neanderthals like Perry. Once you point out that their 'lil club endorsed them they shrug it off...oh well, just shows we have more work to do.

Gack. What a tool. This is the most offensive comment i've ever heard drop out of his ugly mouth. I'm no fan of Kay Bitchingson, but i can't wait until the Repug primaries. Throw in Grandma Strayhorn and it will be quite the sissyfight. Desperately seeking: an electable Democrat.

I voted for Perry simply because of the money laundering Democratic candidate opposing him at the time. Not one of my better choices I see now.

Unfortunately I think Ann is too tainted with big tobacco lobbying money. Plus, she has said she is very happy talking politics...not doing it. I can't wait to see the one tough grandma dwarf (Carole Keeton McClellan McClellan Rylander Strayhorn--did I forget any of her names?) go after Rick Perry. Based on their bitter history, this is going to be fun to watch!

Gee, is this the time to say that "inclusion wins"? Looks like another loss for inclusion. How utterly disgusting. Is this how the Republican party honors those whom served this great nation? Actions like this lead me to believe this nation ain't so great anymore, if this is how we treat our vets. I've got a better idea...since I am so much more of an American than these idiots in Texas, why don't we just lop off Texas and Florida and give them to Fidel Castro. The recent actions in Texas and the election debacle in Florida seem to be much more communist than democratic, and quite frankly, these states deserve to live under a communist dictator. How unchristian their actions have become. I for one would be very happy for the United States if we were rid of these two troublesome states. My only concern is my parents live in Florida, and my brother lives in Texas. Maybe we could exempt Austin. It's a cool city, and plus Bobby lives there.
HornFan
What does Independent Gov. candidate "Kinky" Freidman have to say about this? So far, he's getting my vote, but I will look forward to the BLOODY Republican primary this year.

It will be a hoot watching them eat their own. Dirty politics is a true sport in Texas and this one is shaping up to be down right nasty. It was supposedly Repugs who floated the story about our good-haired Gov. getting it on with a "top" male official in Austin.

No, but the problem is they wish they could. Half of the folks who vote for such losers are the people who want to stop the world and get off. They see Hollywood and MTV as contributing to the coarsening and thugging-up of the culture and want to return to a simpler time when the man was the breadwinner and the woman was the cookie-baking mom and gay people lived off somewhere foreign, like "the Village" or "San Francisco" (said with pinkie pointed up). Problem is, those times only ever really existed on fictional TV sitcoms.

Well, let's see ... it's been barely 24 hours since this thread began and already some are complaining about a lack of fodder for their canting cannons. So be it, but sorry to disappoint: The claim that LCR - which? TX state? HOU or DFW local? LCR National? - endorsed Perry as "good for gays" is a new one on me, so in the time honored tradition of the left, "I demand proof!" And let's not forget that a failure to endorse one candidate does not amount to an endorsement of another. At any rate, I think he's an idiot and never had anything to do with supporting him in any way. I guess that's one of the differences between CA and TX GOPers. All I can say is that the Texas lefties on this board and he deserve each other. As a vet, I find his remarks repulsive.

Travis County (where Austin is) was the only county from South Texas due north to some counties in Kansas to vote for John Kerry. sad.gif So, I'd appreciate you not selling me off to Castro...though some on here who want to squash criticisms probably view me as a Castro disciple--not even close. Their communist viewpoints and arrogance match Castro more than I do.

Methinks he was defending you, Bobby!

I'll be in Austin later this year, and am looking forward to it.

Instead of getting rid of Florida and Texas, I say admit Puerto Rico! The Democratic Senators, all 44 of them, already represent more Americans than the 55 Republicans combined, and with Puerto Rico, they'll have 2 more seats and almost 4 million more people on their side!

Check out what a televangelist had to say last weekend at the bill signing Perry staged at a Christian school (keep in mind this was directly before Perry took the stage):

QUOTE
Perry said he could have signed the bills in the parking lot of a Wal-Mart, but it wasn't the location that was the eye-opener on Sunday. It was Perry's backslapping companions on stage at the event. Consider the words offered by televangelist Rod Parsley, who preceded Perry and praised him for his godly stand, saying the effects of the homosexual agenda in American were substantial. Most homosexuals were anything but happy and carefree, Parsley told the crowd – many suffer from low self-esteem and depression.

\"Gay sex is a veritable breeding ground for disease,\" Parsley went on. \"Only 1 percent of the homosexual population in America will die of old age. The average life expectancy for a homosexual in the United States of America, discounting AIDS, is 42 years of age. Their heterosexual counterpart is 75. A lesbian can only expect to live to be 45 years of age. Her heterosexual counterpart is 79. Homosexuals represent 2 percent of the population, yet today they're carrying 60 percent of the known cases of syphilis. We must not chance an untested social experiment with the security of our children.\"

- Precisely 63.8% of all statistics you see are made up on the spot.
- There are two types of data: the kind that supports your theory, and the kind that's EXTREMELY tricky to analyze.

Everybody needs to realize something here. Perry is courting the religious right vote very heavily because he has lost votes in many other areas. Many in the education field here are Republicans and he has lost many of their votes.

Many other people who vote Republican who are not part of the Christian right are angry at him because of his performance on education during this last legistative session. The Dallas Park Cities crowd are not going to support him because our current education funding system takes more than half their tax money away from them and they were pretty much promised some kind of solution this time and none was found. No Republican gets elected in this state without the support of the ultra-rich suburbs and neighborhoods near Houston and Dallas both.

Even if he gets the Christian right behind him, he is not a lock to get re-elected. Also in this state, you are not required to say what party you are when you register so it may come down to who votes in the primary. A lot of people are going to be motivated to make sure he does not even make the ballot in November.
gmginsfo
Aaron, I understand your point, but that gave Perry no license to set apart gay vets, particularly Iraqi war vets, as he did. Methinks his cluelessness will backfire against him, for even many RR-ers appreciate military service over whatever misgivings they may have on gay issues, which mirrors the respect many people have for fellows who survived combat or one kind or another together, regardless of their sexuality, politics or other differences.

And so JQ, when YOU run for Congress, then we can talk. Besides, Li'l Nancy doesn't officially represent me now that I'm in SD, which is not to admit she did when I lived in SF. Come reapportionment this Fall, we'll likely see several CA Demo-lefties lose their sinecures, and maybe even Pelosi will have to hightail it back to "Bawlimer," from whence she came.
twin58
... Pelosi will have to hightail it back....

Only if you promise to take back Palos Verde resident George Allen in return.

Deal, twin! We just elected a gay GOPer Mayor of neighboring Redondo Beach, so he'll keep Mr. Allen in line.

They should do a pretty good job at cleaning up trash since after-hours trash duty on the Convention floor was their main responsibility at the Republican Convention last year.

Wow, they allowed Log Cabins in at all? I am shocked. Obviously, this IS the party of inclusion. The next thing you know, they'll start letting African-Americans and Jews into the party! (through the back door, of course).

An excerpt of a story in today's Austin paper, the link to the full story follows:

QUOTE
At a June 5 event in the gym of a Fort Worth church, Perry signed into law a measure requiring a minor to obtain parental consent for an abortion and signed a proposed amendment to the state constitution defining marriage as between a man and woman.

His signature on the amendment was symbolic since it qualified for the November ballot simply by actions of the Texas House and Senate.

After the signing, a reporter asked Perry how he would tell Texas' gay and lesbian veterans that they can't come home from Iraq and marry.

Perry said, \"I'm going to say Texas has made a decision on marriage, and if there's a state with more lenient views than Texas, then maybe that's where they should live.\"

His response, aired by a Fort Worth TV station, recognized that Texas lawmakers outlawed gay marriage by law two years ago, a Perry spokesman said.

\"As an Air Force veteran himself, (Perry) certainly believes that all our heroes are always welcome to come home,\" Robert Black said in an e-mail.

Perry's words brought him a cascade of critical e-mail, with more than 140 notes suggesting that he unnecessarily attacked both gays and veterans in what one writer called \"hatespeak.\"

Larry Don Shaw, a Democratic Texas House member with Perry in the 1980s, wrote Perry in an e-mail: \"We need leaders such as you who can help us to remember that we must be united as a people even when we disagree on issues.\"

Three groups — the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, the Lesbian/Gay Rights Lobby of Texas and American Veterans for Equal Rights — said Perry should apologize.

\"Such a person has no business serving in office,\" A.J. Rogue, national president of the veterans group, said in an e-mail, saying Perry's comments \"not only reek of McCarthyism and Naziism, they truly have no place coming from one of our elected representatives of government.\"

About 10 messages to Perry endorsed his comment.

Cathy Cannon of Weatherford, an Army veteran, wrote: \"I am happy to see you helping to keep Texan values. If you are not Texan then you can't understand. If we could get all of the whinebags to move somewhere else we would be a lot better off.\"

Just when I think to myself, I should move back to live closer to my family....crap like this happens, then I realize....I will pay the high rent out here in San Diego, so long as I do not have to take 4 steps back in the closet....live in a state: where there are more executions than any other state, where the separation of church and state obviously means nothing, and where the governor is a bigot.
