And he's not even a homosexual! At least someone high up in that party has a conscience, and a soul....

Yahoo! news: Republican Senator says he may not support W

QUOTE
His spokesman Stephen Hourahan said afterward that if Chafee does write in a name it would be that of Bush's father, former President Bush.

\"I'll look at my options,\" Chafee said in a brief interview on Capitol Hill after discussing his indecision about the current president earlier in the day with reporters in his home state.

Asked if he might not vote for the president, Chafee said: \"That's accurate.\" His office said this has been his position for months, though it has gotten little, if any, attention in Washington.

\"There is no secret that on some very important issues I have difference with the current administration,\" Chafee said, listing abortion rights, the environment and war in Iraq (news - web sites).

\"Like all Americans we are looking for some answers to key questions in the weeks ahead,\" Chafee said. \"You wait until November 2 and make your choices.\"
That's right: we're looking for some answers to key questions, because we're not all zombies and lapdogs....

This isn't really a surprise to me. Lincoln Chafee was rumored to be toying with a party switch prior to Jeffords' move. Chafee (and Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins and Jim Jeffords are all four are pretty good Republicans who faithfully and thanklessly represent what the GOP used to be: the party of personal responsibility and sound fiscal practices. The current GOP has wh*red its soul to privacy-invading Christian fundamentalists and corporate interests, and these four refuse to play along 100% of the time. They are routinely denigrated by the national GOP (Bush, Frist, DeLay, Hastert, etc.). Why any of them remains in the GOP is a mystery to me.

They lose a Republican vote but they gain Zell Miller's vote for the "outlaw dictator".

Chuck Hagel of Nebraska has also been critical of Bush.

I sort of understand why Chafee remains a Republican. Part of it, I'm sure, is tradition. His father was the sitting Republican Senator from Rhode Island for a long time (along with the very blue-blooded Democrat Claiborne Pell). He is the anti-Zell, but I also am wondering whether, if the Democrats were to regain the Senate, he might switch. I doubt it, though.

Still, even Collins, Snowe, etc., probably are going to vote for W. For Chafee to publicly announce that he's considering not doing so is pretty major to me.

Working within...hummmm...what has that resulted in for the gay community? Oh, yeah, I just remembered: awarded second-class status, getting pretty much stomped at a party convention, and being told by people within their own party that they are evil. Working within without success.
