For the second year in a row, Ted Koppel will devote an entire episode of Nightline to read the names of more than 900 Americans killed in the war during the last year. Last year, he read more than 700. Fascist Sinclair Broadcast Group, warn your stations!!!

QUOTE
'NIGHTLINE' KOPPEL TO READ NAMES OF SERVICEMEN KILLED OVER LAST YEAR

One year since honoring the American service men and women killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, Ted Koppel and ABC News “Nightline” will again pay tribute to the fallen by devoting an extended broadcast to reading the names and showing the photographs of more than 900 service members who have been killed in those countries over the last year. Entitled “The Fallen,” the special “Nightline” broadcast will air Memorial Day, Monday, May 30, 2005 at 11:35 p.m. ET on the ABC Television Network. ABC News Radio will air excerpts of the program.

Last year on April 30, 2004, “Nightline” honored the 721 service men and women killed in action and in non-hostile situations in Iraq since the start of the war there. Less than a month later on May 26, 2004, the program paid tribute to the122 service members killed in the war on terror since the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in October 2001. Monday’s program will honor those killed in Iraq and Afghanistan and whose names have been released by the Defense Department since last year’s broadcasts.

“Nightline” will show a photograph of each service man and woman in succession with his/her name, military branch, rank and age, while Mr. Koppel reads their names aloud. In order to include each name and face, “Nightline” will be extended from 30 to about 45 minutes. Many of the photographs featured in the program are being provided by The Military Times Media Group, publishers of Army Times, Navy Times, Air Force Times and Marine Corps Times.

I hope this is the last time Ted K. will be reading this list....I hope all the men and women come home within the next year so this broadcast will no longer be necessary. Props to Ted for doing this. As disgusted as I am with this war, I am glad Ted is recognizing their efforts.

I'm glad Ted is doing it, too. This will probably be the last time Ted reads the list since he is retiring sometime before the end of the year, but it doesn't mean the murders of Americans and innocent Iraqis won't continue...plus, there is still the Bush hush-hush plan to travel one country to the East. Spreading freedom...one unwanted invasion at a time. smile.gif
MiMatt38
Can there be any doubt why most Americans see the MSM media as biased, liberal, and destructive of American values?

Hell, even the majority of hard core Dem voters see it that way.

TedK, PeterJ, DanR, BillMoyers all need to retire and help in the journalism/entertainment industry's effort to restore balance in reporting.

BillMoyers is so far outside the mainstream, his penchant for spinning liberalized stories may have harmed CPB, NPR and PBS their $$$ and/or editorial production control.

Read the list TedK. Cause the majority of those brave men and women were killed by terrorists and while helping to bring democracy to the Middle East.

Pure grandstanding. Pure entertainment for the anti-war crowd. Watch for the 30 minute WeScream4HowieDean commercial spots.

Okay MiMatt38 ... switch to decaf ...

Anyway, I watched last year when Ted Koppel read through the names and my heart ached. So many beautiful souls lost for no apparent reason.

Like everyone else, I want them home.

Nuttin to see here folks...move along now, please return to important stuff like the runaway bride, American idol and Michael Jackson.

Move on now, freedom is on the march.

say what you want, in my opinion they deserve to have thier names read and everyone should watch and listen. Its a sign of respect and thats the least we can do. How anyone anti war or pro war could be upset over this on memorial day is beyond me.

The pro-war idiots are against it because it puts a name and a face to the dead. The "give war a chance" crowd would rather wrap themselves in the flag, stay safe and snug behind their keyboards and throw out meaningless cliches.
hockeyTom
I agree with you bud. Its all about respect. Its so sad that so much of whats going on with this war over there is being withheld or hidden by this administration and the conservative media.
MiMatt38
Reality check here... come on, breath... think... you might want to rewrite those last posts.

Memorial Day will be observed by millions of Americans who aren't, unlike some here, willing to use the war dead to make political points, sell ratings, or hype their agenda.

And you think you appreciate reality?

You should be equally saddened, like most Americans will be, that TedK and ABC choose to use the war dead to make political points and sell airtime. That kind of journalism even cheapens entertainment news --let alone serious news shows like TedK and the Daily Show.

Oh wait... you guys won't even be watching TedK 'cause on Memorial Day you'll be standing in line for the 6-7-8-9th time with emotionally stunted 11 yrs waiting to see ROTS.

Did you elect to wrap yourself in the flag on this one 'cause Frist-Allen-Coleman won't need their's this weekend? I wonder.

I have two nephrews in Iraq. Every day when I hear xx marines were killed today, I wonder if Mark and David are still alive. I know the sacrifices their families are making because of their involvement in the war. Most of them believe they are defending our country and I understand why they have to believe that.

If my nephrews were to die, I would be appreciate this type of gesture. For some to suggest that this is grandstanding or an anti-war media stunt makes me sick.

Whether you agree with our reasons for being in the war or not, you must understand that these young men and women are dead and they made the supreme sacrifice. Remembering them should never be a shame or seen as a political stunt.

MM, shut the f*ck up.

Amen, USAF. I couldn't agree more and I couldn't have said it better.

You and I may have different views on the subject more broadly, but it's revealing that the two of us, who have both actually served in the theater, see it as a sign of respect.

People on this thread and elsewhere can and will view the broadcast their own political filter, but I hope that they will remember what Memorial Day is truly about.

... remember what Memorial Day is truly about....

Thanks for your remarks. It upsets me to see the advertising circulars in the newspapers touting the big Veteran's Day or Memorial Day sales on sofas, Toyotas, wide-screen TVs, etc.

I do not devote either day to shopping. I do not go to the beach. I do not have a festive cookout.

I am dismayed to see that the NCAA DI men's lacrosse championship game is being held on Memorial Day.

I think it's rather sad that those in favor of the war are so insecure in their support of it that a sincere effort to honor the fallen in the cause they believe in is to be feared and reviled.

Exactly, jqueer.
tnmanfan, best to your nephews.
The fact is, it's real easy to put a "support our troops" sticker on a gas-guzzler. "our troops" are real flesh and blood human beings and so are the "enemy". The attempt to sanitize the war by barring mention of the dead, hiding the wounded, hiding the coffins, is an attempt to hide from us the real cost of this war. Who is kidding whom? Do the troops not know that they have inadequate armor? That they were told they'd be welcomed with flowers and candy? That it would be over in a few weeks? Now we are hearing the occupation may take a CENTURY!

No doubt the war mongers will all make speeches about "support our troops" while cutting funds for VA in order to ensure the tax cut for millionaires becomes permanent.

During Vietnam, there was a week that was the deadliest in history for US forces. Life magazine ran their pictures. Just the pictures, which each person's name, hometown and age. Page after page. And they were called traitors.

Telling the truth is not treason.

I will watch the show and say a prayer for them and also say a prayer for all the people over there now. I have some friends going over there next month and yes im worried for them.
I still dont see how anyone can be against Ted Koppel doing this show.
It still bothers the shit out of me that most of the people for the war are the people that know there is no way they will every be there. It's so easy to say we should be over there when your ass will never be on the line. I was in Afghanistan for 4 months and saw dead soldiers and not near the number they have in Iraq. That is something you see you will never forget and all the people that gave up their lives in Iraq they do deserve to have their names read an their pictures shown, if it was up to me
it would be on every channel on primetime.

I may be mistaken, but didn't Ted's special last year run commercial free? If that's the way it's being done this time, the network will be losing money.

Hey Shipmate, what about me? Don't I get a USN shoutout over here? Kandahar was lovely in the springtime! biggrin.gif

Seriously, though, it saddens me that simple gestures of respect get ripped through politics. Listen to AZaf -- take a few minutes during a holiday weekend to think, to pray, to honor. Remembering the war dead -- of this or any war -- isn't about the politics of those who got us there, it's about the soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, and coastguardsmen who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Serving in Afghanistan without a doubt changed my life. Forever. But so did the day that I spent last fall walking the landing beaches of Normandy, standing atop Pointe du Hoc, and walking through the more than 9,000 graves at the American Cemetery there in Northern France. Its not just about this war, and its not about anyone of us -- its about those who laid down their lives, and their families.

As someone who volunteered to serve, who has "been there" and is ready and willing to go when the next call comes, I think I know what I'm talking about.

Backing away from my soapbox now...

Personally, I am glad that Ted K is reading the names and for the life of me, I just don't understand how anyone can see this as a bad thing or a political/liberal/conservative move. WTF?

I am thankful and grateful that my buddy AZAF made it back from Afghanistan alive and well. Thanks to you too, Penn State for serving and I'm glad that you made it back safely. It is unfortunate and sad that so many of our service men and women will get no chance to have a future. Who knows, some of those who have died may have even posted on this board. Reading their names and honoring them, whether you believe in the war or not, is the least we can do.

My cousin's fiance is in the reserves and has been over to Iraq as a transport driver. In fact, he has been there twice. When my mom told me that he went back for a second tour of duty, I couldn't believe it. I may not have been for the war, but I have the highest respect for him and believe him to be a "true american patriot". Thank goodness he made it back safely on both tours. My cousin said he could never tell her where he was for securtiy reasons, only that he was safe. She always feared the day when the call from him would never come. They are getting married later this fall. Had something happened to him, I know I would appreciate hearing his name on the tv. And I would have appreicated to hear the names of AZAF, or Penn State if something had happened to them.

So, on this Memorial Day weekend as I do every year, I will hang my American flag on my flag post because it's one of my ways of saying "Thank You" to all to those who have served, those who are serving, and all those who's lives were lost.

As having spent this past weekend in Washington D.C., I have to say that the contradictions when it comes to politics and the military have never been so clear to me.

To begin, I think the whole meaning of Memorial Day has been lost. Not just in terms of the 'vacation' and bbq aspect, but how the day is celebrated officially. I was watching the beginning of the Indy 500 and all the pre-race ceremonies were directed at current troops and how great they are (with one only one mentioning of the soldiers from Indiana who have been killed). It would have been much more appropriate to have featured Veterans and not current soldiers.

Secondly, I got to experience the noisy and annoying Roll of Thunder in D.C. If you don't know what it is (and coorect me if I am wrong on anything) is that it's thousands of motorcyclists that come to D.C. to demand action on POW-MIA, benefits for veterans, etc. In DC, there seems to be a little resentment about the event because many bikers come just to join the big pack and rev their engine, instead of going for the real cause. And not just that, but I saw a person on TV speaking about the issue, and she was pretty much ripping the government about on these issues. And does anyone criticize and go after them? No. And when John Kerry criticizes these things, the whole Republican party thinks he's anti-American? Give me a break!

And the National Mall? The lawn wasn't even mowed on most of it.

One thing I always could not believe is the way D.C. keeps up with it's grounds. It is absolutely horrible and it makes D.C. look like a white trash town compared with the way other cities in the U.S. and over the world take care of their parks and memorials.
twin58
Veterans Day is for honoring veterans. Memorial Day is for honoring servicemembers who have died while on active duty.

I do not get Rolling Thunder at all. I don't see how it honors anybody. The whole Harley experience does nothing for me.

Upkeep of the parks and memorials is the responsibility of the National Park Service, not the D. C. government.

No, last year did not run commercial-free because I remember how the "Full Monty" touring production commercial seemed very out-of-place during that type of broadcast. Last night's was not commercial-free, either.

Another very well-done broadcast. If he was going to stick around at ABC and still be doing Nightline next year, he should have said, "We'll do this again next year." Because we know the killing will continue.
MiMatt38
So, when it's all said and done... TedK used the war dead to promote his political anti-war agenda, helped make a lot of money for ABC at a time when the network is suffering through it's worst financial quarter, and boosted ratings slightly by tapping into the minority hate-and-vengence crowd.

It's too bad that biased, crassly opportunistic entertainment programs use the war dead to make a profit. Where's the screaming and ranting and spewing from the left now? Oh... you guys approved of it, I see from the posts. Not suprised.

Your blabbing is getting old and I've tried ignoring it but this is going too far. You OBVIOUSLY know nothing of what you speak. Ted Koppel is NOT anti-war. If you took the time to watch the broadcast before coming on here and lying your ass off, you'd know that FACT! He has spoken out in favor of the war BOTH times he has done one of these memorial shows. He has said that he has been accused of being against the war which is, in fact, NOT TRUE. He supports the war in Iraq. Geez, you aren't even worth the hassel, anymore. Be gone, MiMatt38...be gone with you.

BobbyDearest, when did you get elected chief goon and enforcer of the OutSports BBs? Write fairly, accurately, and honestly and I won't have a reason to comment.

Spew, lie, defame, invent, smear --and you've given me a platform.

The answer is in telling the TRUTH, BobbieDearest. I don't mind all your left-of-center anti-American spin... but it's the dishonest, falsehood spitting nonsense that calls for correction.

And grow up on the troll slam; it's as effective as RazorBack's perpetual chickenhawk silliness... it just don't cut it.

GatorJ, ha! Good one... on that we agree --except it's about every other thread in OutSports that's like a train wreck... bad logic, faulty premise, lots of spin, blinders on, etc... and I'm not even in those threads.

I kind of like the parallel and on-topic comment the former RNC Chair offered recently about WeScream4HowieDean

“Watching a Howard Dean speech is a little like people who go to a NASCAR race to see a crash,” said Ed Gillespie, a former Republican Party chairman.

Can't dimiss it no matter how hard you spin it, BobbyDearest, TedK did it to advance his anti-war agenda. Pure and simple. It's a device he first used against Pres Carter when Carter left our brave soldiers, diplomats and workers in the hands of the Iranian fundamentalists after Carter singlehandedly helped topple the Shah. (It's ok, go look in your history books... it'll be there guy. Honest.) Reality hasn't been your strong suit, has it?

As a Libertarian, I am amazed (on a daily basis) that:
(a) 95% of gays are bought and sold by a party that really doesn't care about their rights
(cool.gif And that the other 5% includes a hefty portion of truly PSYCHOPATHIC, self-hating faggots who would march into the gas chamber if the GOP told them to, and even volunteer to hit the "on" switch, all the while singing, "God Bless America."

MiMatt represents the worst example I think I've ever seen of group b. But that doesn't let the rest of you off the hook. Some of ya need to quit towing the Democratic Party's line.

My OTHER 2 cents - I think the fallen should be given MORE tribute than a TK script reading. I think we need to erect a f**kin monument on the mall ASAP. Better yet, maybe the current administration should SACK UP (bunch a draft dodging pussies), and actually give veterans the benefits the deserve.

There's enough in my post to piss off EVERYONE. Have at it...and MiMatt, go drink some antifreeze.
