The Cubs have fired manager Don Baylor, according to ESPN.com. No surprise as the Cubbies have underachieved all year. Currently they are 12 1/2 games behind first place St. Louis. Baylor's replacement will be Bruce Kimm, promoted from AAA Iowa.

While I don't really fault him for the Cubs' terrible play, he admitted to having no firm or deep relationships with any of his players, which is just awful. They weren't playing well or consistently, and Baylor lacked the means to motivate them. Sammy Sosa and Kerry Wood can't carry that team. They need better pitching and batters that try harder to manufacture runs. The devastated Cardinals should not be leading the division right now, but every other Central Division team is still weaker.
