Three-time All-Star had been battling cancer

It's a very sad day in Baseball. My sympathies go out to his family and friends.

From the article:
QUOTE
Bobby Bonds, a three-time All-Star and the MVP of the 1973 game, hit 332 home runs and stole 461 bases for the Giants, New York Yankees, California Angels, Chicago White Sox, Texas, Cleveland, St. Louis and the Chicago Cubs.
I remember his going from team to team back when he was playing and wondering why, when he was one of the best players in the game. This was in the days before free agency made it so players bounced from team to team easily.

I went to the Giants/Marlins game today at
Pac Bell Park and there were some tear-inducing tributes to the greatness of Bobby Bonds. Moments of silence, the whole thing.

What was interesting is that the Giants lineup had NONE of the regulars. Yorvit Torrealba was the only starter that was on last year's team. Also, I couldn't see any of the regulars in the dugout. Even when Jeffrey Hammonds hit a home run, the crowd in the dugout for hi-fives was only about 6 guys, none of them regulars.

I'll bet that most of the regular players were with the Bonds family, or just showing respect in some other manner. Rich Aurilia showed up as a PH in about the 8th inning, but that was it.

Kind of a stirring tribute. Giants still won by the way.

Like almost every other sports telecast, on TBS they run a crawl along the bottom of the screen during Braves games showing other scores and sports news. Here's what it said yesterday: "Bobby Bonds, father of Barry Bonds, dies at age 57..." Not a mention of Bobby's own career. Sheesh.
